I am due to visit Los Angeles (Anaheim) in April and have only managed to get occasional photographs of US trains during my previous visits. I would like to spend a day getting photographs of a good selection of trains/railroads - where would be the best place to go?
In the UK we have depots where locos are maintained but I know depots in the US are what we call stations - are there any large maintenance yards in Los Angeles and is access allowed (its not in the UK).
Fullerton station is the best and safest place I can recommend. its about 20 miles east of LA downtown but just north of Anahiem. Around Metro LA its pretty dicey in most places, trains dont go thru the best parts of the city.
Most inbound and outbound traffic moves thru eastward these days, thats why Fullerton is a good place, lots of BNSF frieght trains, San Diegan and Metrolink passenger trains, all move thru Fullerton, plus its in the middle of a nice city, has bathrooms and a small cafe.
Can’t disagree with vsmith, that’s your best bet- but if you have more time and don’t mind alittle driving, head on over to Cajon Canyon, north of San Bernardino. Check out this thread for a taste of what you can see there:
I would recommend Colton, Barstow & Daggett because you get both UPRR & BNSF action. For scenery the Cajon Pass is top notch & also features UPRR & BNSF action [:)]
