Volunteers give brief tour of ‘Electroliner’ under restoration
It’s VIDEO. Shows us instead of talking about it
I have fond memories of catching an Electro-Liner on the CTA elevated tracks in Chicago and riding to Milwaukee during my days in the early 1960’s as a student at North Park University. And yes, I did really enjoy the Electro-Burger. I look forward to seeing the restoration at the IRM.
I stopped watching when they made fun of good midwestern food. I rode the Electroliner once and didn’t go to the cafe car. If I had know the daily special was liver sausage or tongue, I would have gone and had a meal!
Thanks to Jim Wren for his exploration into videos and streaming to give our readers a more complete feel to railroading than just the printed word. Now if he could develop a system to bring the smell of coal smoke and hot grease!!!
Well I sure hope they get that cafe’ car 100% restored, my life won’t be complete until I get an Electro-Burger!
The liver sausage and tongue, not so much.
Good luck, looks great. I rode the one at Rockhill in 2014 and hope to ride it again this year. But, their paint doesn’t look as good.
Somewhere there is the story of how the North Shore mech. dept. decided to find the Electroliner’s top speed capability by torching off a part that limited speed (perhaps someone can help here with detail). Then a test run was made that scared everyone since the Liner kept accelerating past the 100 mph mark, which the track/signaling infrastructure was not designed to handle. Once back in the shops, the offending part was re-installed. Also fascinating is the map of Milw-Chicago service in the current Trains mag.
The two fellows pictured I know from working with them on NS749 at IRM. Ed is a conscientious, meticulous restorer and will have this 'liner looking better than the day she left the factory. John will tackle any task that needs doing. About the only thing they can’t do is print money. I assure you that any help to the restoration fund will be used well by these two as they continue to work on the interior.
I used to ride this train when I was stationed at Great Lakes Naval training center back in 1957
