Hello Forum,
After N&W purchased the Wabash, would it have been prototypical to see Wabash hoppers being pulled by an N&W FM Train Master on a coal drag?
Would it have been prototypical to see NYC hoppers in the same scenario, i.e.in a coal drag behind a N&W FM Train Master? I know coal hoppers were generally supposed to stay on the home railroad, but I was wondering would there have ever been a need for them to travel off the home railroad.
Thanks,
Bernard
Wabash did have several Trainmasters that N&W ended up with, and after the merger N&W would use Wabash and NKP hoppers everywhere on the railroad.
Another N&W predecessor, the Virginian, interchanged with NYC at Charleston, WV (and supplied most of N&W’s Trainmasters). There were certainly empty NYC hoppers returned via this interchange, but not often loaded since almost all of VGN’s coal went to Norfolk for export.
One thing about railroads and model railroading: There’s a prototype for everything!
