Wabash Stations In Pittsburgh and Buffalo??

In Buffalo the Station on the international RR Bridge was said to be built by Wabash. Pittsburg has a tunnel called the Waba***unnel. Did Wabash come this far East?

I’m not 100% positive, but I believe the Waba***unnel in Pittsburgh was part of the old Monon RR. There were so many different Railroads in Pittsburgh that merged or was taken over that sometimes the issue gets cloudy. My memory recalls PRR, B&O, NYC, Union Railroad, BR&P, W&LE, P&LE, B&LE, P&S, Monon, and various other shortlines some of which were USS owned. I know I’m missing a few more but the old cranium is getting better at forgetery than memory. I will try to research this in more detail as time allows. Thanks.

That was the Wabash Pittsburgh Terminal Railway, built by Gould to extend his Wheeling and Lake Erie from Ohio into Pittsburgh and down to Connellsville. Gould owned the Wabash at the western end of the W&LE and the Western Maryland which made it to Connellsville. He also had the Missouri Pacific and the Central of New Jersey, and wanted a chain of railroads across the USA.
The Wabash itself got to Toledo, Ohio, and then east to Buffalo through Canada.

Here is some good information on the men and their dream

And the some what humorous history of the City of Pittburgh’s long frustrated attempts to use the left behinds for something useful

Yes, they did. The customs house at Black Rock (Buffalo) was built by Grand Trunk (before the Canadian Government took over) and GT’s tenant Wabash. The Buffalo link was intended to link Waba***o the Lackawanna. The Passenger station at Black Rock was a New York Central one. Wabash interchanged with Lehigh Valley at Niagara Falls.

Wow…That’s quite a mess associated with Gould’s RR in Pittsburgh…and eventually the auto traffic use of the tunnel after 100 yrs of it’s build…Pennsylvania is my home state and the story is an interesting one to me.

Reply—Did a Wikiepeda serch and found thats Gould only had the System intact to Buffalo and Pittsburg only from 1909 to 1915 enough to build a Huge Station In P-burg( that saw only two trains a day) and gain Trackage rights over to Buffalo…

I guess that timing must have been all wrong for Gould.

Since he at one time controlled the Erie, and the Erie crossed the REAL Wabash in Huntington Indiana, he coulda had it made…but I guess he was forced out of Erie before the grand ambition for a coast to coast system arose?

Do they still have the Skybus at South Park?

No. The test track at the park was torn down some time ago.

Wasn’t the Canadian trackage rights accessed through Detroit? It would require a longer ferry ride to make Canada from Toledo.

Probally…Also Wabash and Rutland every other railroad has there own steamship line

I mistakenly had mentioned the Monon Railroad and was in reference to the Montour Railroad. Sorry about that, The mind is older and less reliable, I should have researched it farther than just memory. Goes to show that haste makes waste. Thanks to Locomutt for the wake-up.

The Montour is now a Bike Path and oddy enough to be the future light rail route to the Airport. It also has two trestles that are amoung the highest bike path bridges in the Country
