I’m looking for good advice on the purchase of a walk-around throttle. Please do not talk about DCC, I want a walk-around throttle for my Non-DCC layout. I’ve heard good and bad things about the MRC Tech4-350. Also there is the Control Master 20. Any others? Any opinions?
I built one out of A potentiometer and a DPDT switch. Both of those can be found at any radioshak. Just ask for them and they will show you where they are. I can make a diagram if you would like.
I use the Controlmaster 20’s , i love them. the other option you have is an “Innovator”, it was discontinued ,but has been Picked up by Alpine Electronics. they are in the Walthers Book. These are Sweeeet Walkarounds.
I use 2 old MRC cab control units I got of a mark down table at hobby shop for 5.00 They are simple tuff and easy to work on I use the guts of a old power pack mounted under layout with 4 wire phone cable two wires to track two to power pack and your ready to go. I use 1/4 inch plugs for quick conect and disconect Cox 47
If you’re looking for something a little more challenging, try www.awrr.com . There are a number of circuits you can build. I built two of thew tethered walk-around control with momentum. I really like them. If you get stuck, Fred (owner of the website) is very helpful!
I have been using a pair of walkaround (with memory) throttles from GML Enterprises for a good many years. They have been good and reliable with a lot of features.
Check their website at: www.theGMLenterprises.com
I have been using the “Yardmaster” walk-around throttle from Dallee Electronics for ten years now–no problems and excellent control. You will have to also purchase an A.C. transformer (15-18 volts). Dallee can furnish one with your order that will work. I used to use the old MRC “cab control” which is also O.K. but not as good as the Yardmaster. I especially like the center-off position on the reversing switch.
I too have been using GML throttles for over 10 years and I’m totally happy with them.
Don’t need no DCC either and don’t want it.
Gene has a great product and backs it up with a great warranty.
Good luck,
gtr
