I recently purchased a Walthers 567 Prime Mover kit and am looking to paint it. My question is this: Would it be correct (for a new/rebuilt one) to paint it flat aluminum? If not, what would be the correct color(s)? Thank you for your assistance with my inquiry.
“Suede grey”
Most EMD (and GE) engines I’ve seen were a medium grey color. Lighter than reefer grey.
The “Suede Gray” could be replicated with a mix of reefer gray and reefer white, correct?
Here’s one:

Dunno how correct it is, but in the FP7 owned by the RCT&HS, the prime mover is indeed that color shown above, as is the cab interior. It’s slightly visible in a couple of pictures I took a few years ago when I was inside the unit.

It would depend on the road. The PRR were white. I have also seen them a tan beige. I also seen a yellow Alco power plant. Then you can’t forget the light apple green too. It was whatever your road foreman of engines wanted.

I think at least as delivered, each had a distinctive color, like car motors, Chevy Orange, Ford Blue, etc. After overhauls, I suppose the railroads would repaint them whatever they had.

Every EMD engine I have been in has a suede grey prime mover. Cab interiors were delivered in the same, but EMD has gone to a suede tan since around the ‘60’ line production.
That said, EMD will paint what ever the customer requests - it just costs more. The GN had a habit of painting everything that ‘puke sea foam green’ on most cab interiors as locomotives were shopped. I remember touring the GB&W’s shop and they had a Alco 251 prime mover they were overhauling - it was painted in machinery grey.
