What would be a good paint scheme for this model? I would guess the real structure was made of metal, not wood, due to the heat involved. Close-up photos would be appreciated.

Hi,

I’ve got one on my layout, but am unable to get pics on here (I used to, can’t anymore). My housing colors go with the rest of the terminal (off yellow & green trim, grey roof), and the metal structure is a dirty brown/black. It is all weathered of course.

I cut a hole under the track and put a small wood box under the benchwork, and filled it with cinders and weathered as well. For a small structure it took a lot of work, but the end result was well worth it.

I’m embarrassed… I got my colors wrong, for I did it from recall instead of going to the next room. Richhotrain said he will post some of my pics, and I thank him for it.

Note that I made a custom plate to allow for ashes from two tracks.

Great minds must think alike Modileman. Mine is Old Silver for the shack, Aged Concrete for the footing, with cinders in the bottom, and the rest fo the structure is Gunmetal. I also replaced all the chain work with Campbell Scale chain.

I did mine similar to the others. Silver shack, grimy black structure, and concrete base and pit.

That looks like 933-3042 coaling tower and 933-3181ash pit where the ash gon is on the same track as the coal hoist track on the coaling tower. I am thinking of a similar arrangement but am wondering if the track centres are similar. I have the tower and the centers are about 3 3/4". I don’t yet have the ash pit but have read that the centers are 3". Do they actually work well together?

I use cheap acrylics from Hobby Lobby. Platinum for the corrugated shack, wrought iron frame, mixed concrete usually from desert sand plus maybe slate gray.
