Walthers Bascule Bridge Question

I was wondering if any of the modelers have the Walthers Bascule Bridge on their layouts. I’ve been told the opening is 21"-22", also been told the motors are not of the best quality. Let me know if this is true from those that have this bridge. I also want to know (very important to me) does it open at a 90 degree or does it open at like a 45 degree angle? Any info on this bridge would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to all of you that look and respond,
Ross

I can tell you the motor absolutely sucks. I’m sure there’s at least one person here for whom it has worked flawlessly but in my experience, that’s not the case… I didn’t measure it on my layout but your dimension sounds about right… The part that opens actually spans about 16 inches and the rest is stationary. It opens to a little less than 90 degrees, certainly more than 45… About 80-85 I’d say… Not showing it open but you can see mine here…

and another here…

It does build into a decent looking model though…

Good luck,
Jeff

That was by far the quickest response I have ever gotten, with picture too. Thank you very much Jeff for responding so quickly.

You may run into trouble finding one. I think Walthers is retiring the kit and it is not available at a lot of the Internet sites so if you want it and see it you should probably buy it.

If you are planning to use it to straddle a walkway, you may want to reconsider. I was going to do that with mine, but I decided against it because it is so fragile, and it would only take one occurrence of a clumsy or oversized person bumping into the ‘open’ drawspan to cause major damage. [:O] I’m a tad risk-averse for something like that.
