I posted a post earlier about what I got as bargains at a local train show. The intermodal well cars I purchased were made in the early '90s according to the data sheet. The couplers look exactly like Kadee No.5 on their. The cars came in the factory box in the original cellophane. The seller told me this was part of his collection and the box was never opened. He was selling off his collection because he was switching to N scale.
Hi Will,
Obviously I can’t speak for all of the Walthers cars. I do have a couple of Walthers intermodal cars that had Kadee clone couplers in them RTR. The couplers do favor Kadees , but are not. The ones I pulled out of one car were plastic knuckle-spring couplers with the two bent plastic centering springs. The cars like this one on my layout have Kadees, so I must have changed them out. I run some fairly long trains and have some decent grades, so I run metal couplers. They cut down on coupler deflection and train separations. You can probably run the couplers on these cars happily for quite some time. Kadees? Probably not.

As long as it works, a coupler is a coupler is a coupler. You end up woth problems, change 'em
