I went to my local hobby shop looking for more of the new Peco code 83 turnouts, but they were “out of stock.” They had a ton of Walthers Code 83 stuff so I substituted Walthers for the Peco product.
My question is this? Is Walthers as good as Peco with their track and turnouts?
One thing that I immediately noticed about the Walthers turnouts is that the points are not spring loaded like the Peco one’s are.
Any imputs or opinions would be appreciated.
I am using the Walthers//shinohara turnouts exclusively. The point tension comes from Tortoise switch machines or Caboose industries ground throws. Only problem so far is LHS ran out and more are on back order.

I’ve been waiting for walthers turnouts for over 3 months now. I finally purchased some Peco turnouts. Having both, I like the Peco better. Better details, better overall prototypical look and feel. 0.02.

I actually drove up to Spencer, NC this weekend to go to the NC transportation museum. On the opposite side of the street is one of the nicest model RR stores that I’ve ever seen. It’s called the Little Choo Choo store. The store is very well stocked with almost anything you could ever imagine wanting or needing. They had a ton of Walthers Code 83 stuff.
You are correct, I have yet to find anything even close to well stocked model train store here in SC. It almost seems as though there are no model railroaders in SC, or if there are, maybe they all shop online instead.
If you ever get a few hours, Spencer is the place to go. I know that it takes me about 2 hours to get there from Columbia, so maybe 3 hours from where you are. If you do, the Spencer shops are a “must see” and be sure to bring a camera.
