I am thinking of getting one of these built up towers #2839 but cant decide on which color. I am leaning towards the two tone grey for something different than my other railroad buildings. I model the Burlington Northern so I would guess each railroad has there own building colors. Does anyone have one of these built up towers and if so what color? Also how do they look? My second choice is the cream and green.
I own the ochre and maroon version along with the speeder shed, crossing shanty, freight house and station. I’m pretty pleased with them. I think they can do with some weathering but so does every other built up model you get today. Here’s a picture of mine on the layout:
I haven’t done anything yet to match it to the ground cover, etc. but you get an idea of what it looks like.
DIFFERENT RR’S painted their wood buildings to certain schemes - and of course at different periods.
Example:Santa Fe’s early wayside buildings were a Tuscan Red, later Colonial Yellow with Brick red asphalt roofs, and Olive Green trim. Mojave desert buildings had Aluminum paint and Red roofs during the 40’s. Be aware that Colonial Yellow faded towards Creamy yellow and the Brick red to Pink in the California sun.
SP at that time used their Yellow with Green Asphalt roofs and Brown trim.
Books are a point of reference, but early pictures in color are non existant. When I visited ATSF’s restored Littlton CO. station, it had been repainted to it’s original Tuscan Red, by the city and is now a museum.
While variety is the spice of life, as noted above, most RRs paint their wood frame buildings to a consistant scheme. Burlington Northern’s wood frame buildings were/are white
Kits and paints for me. They are generally less expensive, I can customize the colors much more easily pre-assembly and I get a unique, one-of-a-kind structure. Besides, I enjoy the hours I spend painting them and putting them together.
