Well, I just tried one of these kits per walthers instructions and I can’t see any way that a standard Kadee coupler is going to work. Anyone here done this conversion yet?? A Kadee #5 gives no car-to-car clearance at all…

That’s probably because according to the KaDee conversion chart {included below} an 86 foot hi-cube box car requires a KaDee # 27 coupler, NOT a #5.

See chart, first page, middle column under “Athearn”, 4 inches down under “rolling stock”, 2nd item listed-

Item KaDee coupler needed

I’ve done eight of these conversions, and #41 couplers work best for me.

Thanks for the advice, So then will the #41 Kadees give me another 1/4" in clearance that is needed?
