Walthers gold line Coil cars

For my 14th birthday yesterday I got a pair of Walthers gold line Coil cars with the angled hoods. They have metal handrails with them but in the instructions it says about having to use a #80 drill bit. I do not have one is there another way?

Sorry, but yes, you’ll need to get a #80 bit and a pin vise with a chuck small enough to hold it for this job. The handrails will most likely only fit properly if inserted into this size hole. Since the #80 bit is the smallest typically used, if you haven’t used one before, you should get several.

These are very tiny and fragile bits. If you are very careful, you can get all the holes drilled and not break one. If you are not careful at all, you’ll just keep breaking bits and get very frustrated. This is something you just have to learn by practice, so take it easy for best results.

But it sounds like a great birthday present and the handrails are so small, you can run the cars for awhile until you are able to get the tools you need. Having the right tools and knowing how to use them is the key to good modeling. Good luck.

Most tools I dont have yet because I am just now starting to get into accual model railroading. I had a few sets and a couple O houses but I only ran in a loop sort of thing. But I put them away a switched to HO and began building a model railroad of my area of Sandusky and Castilia, Ohio on Lake Erie. So I am still in the buying tools and learning stage so forgive me when I ask stupid questions. Thanks for the help.
