Walthers Great Dome roof will not come off.

I think my Great Dome will look amazing with interior paint and figures because of how visible the interior is. Any idea’s on what the correct colors are?

I have been trying to get the roof off of my Walthers Great Dome and ive been using the twist method and the darn thing is not coming loose. Any suggestions?

Wow FAIL. What about blueish seats and red tables…

You may want to have a look at this link: http://www.gngoat.org/great_domes.htm

In the past, I have used advertisements from older magazines that had artist renderings of passenger car interiors, and have found that for the most part, the colors were fairly accurate.

I couldn’t find any reference to interior colors in my Great Northern Lines East or Lines West books. I did come across a website that has some interior photos of the “River View” in service on the American Orient Express. Towards the bottom of the page there are links to color photos of the interior of the car. It’s probably not accurate for the Empire Builder days, but you could use the photos as a guide to help design the interior colors you want to use.

Don Z.

This is a good thread for me also. I see my Great DOme seats should be red according to Smitty’s link. Don Z’ has a good link also.

Every time I see those publicity pictures of the 1950’s trains, I notice one thing in particular. The passengers are dressed up nicely instead of like tramps, etc. as is now the case in airports. 1/87 figures should be dressed accordingly.

Awesome! Thanks gang when I finish the interior I will psot pictures.

I shoulda known to check the GNGoat website, but it didnt come up on google.

Bump.

Please post your method and results here: http://cs.trains.com/forums/858446/ShowPost.aspx

So far, that thread has become a great resource, and I think your project will make a great addition.[:)]

Thank you DonZ and Smitty. I went ahead and updated that thread.

BTW: I found a very nice interior color shot of a 1940s Hiawatha lounge. I’ll post it there as soon as I get it scanned and uploaded.

I cant get the darned roof off the car, which naturally hinders the process. I re-did the title to reflect this. Any ideas?

Sorry for my confusion.

That is frustrating. I don’t like saying it, but you may have to resort to using a tool to pry up the roof.

Before the twist method was posted on the forum, I’d apply 2 to 3 strips of masking tape on the top of the wall where the roof meets it. This decreases the chance of accidentally gouging or cracking the plastic up there.

Afterwards, I’d get either a very thin, blunt ended screwdriver or file, and at the vestibule area carefully insert it in that crevice between the roof and wall and slowly pull it along towards the opposite end of the car. The roof should start to come up slowly. Alternate back and forth on each side.

In your case see if you can get it to come up a couple of millimeters, the twist method might work then.

At one time a number of us used exacto knives. No longer recommended as you could likely break some tabs. [8)]

YIKES! Well I guess this will be interesting.

Coborn,

Haven’t forgotten about ya! Have you had success in removing the roof yet?

Not yet, been busy down at the railroad, havent had time for models lately. But hopefully this week I can attempt to get enough courage to try this.

I read somewhere that if you put it in the freezer that all the glue will lossone it’s bond. That may or may not work, probably not if they use the same type of glue they se for their P2K locos. (seems to melt the plastic together)
