Walthers claims that the solarium cars are based on Pullman’s 3975c plans. The 3975-series cars (of all plan suffixes) were built between 1928 and 1929. There’s too many to list here (I stopped jotting down notes at 35), so for specific information on individual cars, I suggest heading over to Tom Madden’s exhaustive Pullman website:
http://www.pullmanproject.com/
This is THE Pullman information database. either on or offline!
From what I was looking at though, all the cars were painted in either Pullman green, Pullman pool service (grey/grey), or in the Pennsy’s colors (looks like the VAST bulk of these cars went to the Pennsy after 1948, suggesting that most of these cars served on that road). Buy one of the Pullman marked cars and letter it in the Sun-, Dixie-, Texas, or -Canyon series of cars, and you’ll be all set.
Axel,
The ‘classic’ PS heavyweights were built between 1900 and into the 1930’s. Steel car construction became popular abouthe turn of the Century, First for subway cars, then for common carrier railway passenger cars. By about 1915, just about all mainline passenger cars has steel underframes and/or steel sides.
These cars continued in operation into the 1960’s, many times rebuilt with thermopane windows and ‘streamliner’ paint schemes.
