Great loco .

Great loco .

I have both the CB&Q releases and they look great. The models seems to run fine and I am sure it will get better as it breaks in. Front and rear couplers are a nice touch (pay attention Kato). Now I’m set to work the yard and the ajoining industrial area.

I’m still waiting for mine to arrive at the hobby shop, but I did note one inaccuracy in your historical notations in the review. N&W No. 291 was not the last steam locomotive in revenue on a class I railroad. That honor belongs to 2-8-0 no. 641 of CB&Q-owned Colo. & Sou. which was retired in July, 1962. N&W did, however, use the USRA 0-8-0 design for the last regular service steam locomotive to be built in the US in 1953, in N&W’s shops in Roanoke, Va.

Any input on installing a decoder. My local hobby store said it was a tight fit and didn’t have any recommendatins

Mine looks great and performs well. The most detailed N scale ready to run steam offering yet, so nice I do not have the nerve to convert it to a PRR C1. Real pleased with it.

Affordable price, an seems to have a good performance

wow, I don’t know how you guys got your loco to pull 28 cars on strait and level. mine barley pulls its self around. this loco has a mulititude of problems right out of the box, and I am not the ony one with this problem, as documented on the forums at atlas’ website. to say the least, drivers out of quater, Drivers too narrowly gauged (Per NMRA Standards) that can not easily corected, the wires between the loco and tender aare very fragle, the loco’s weight is incredibly inatiquate, and the list goes on and on. Decoder instlation: NMPA 8 pin plug provided, but squeezing a decoder in it without loosing the weight in the coal bunker is difficult at best (I ended up removing my weight.) on the plus side, this engine oozes with details, that are sharp and plentiful. it is a awesome looking locomotive, and with a ton of tinkering, re-quatering, and some creative shimming here and there, it can be a good loco.

Although there is an 8 pin socket in the tender for a decoder installation, even a very small decoder, such as Digitrax DZ143, will not allow the tender shell to fit properly on the tender frame because of lack of room. Not only do you have to remove the plug from the decoder and solder the wires directly to the socket, some of the weight must also be removed. Other than making the installation of a decoder more difficult than should be, this is a great engine.

Sounds like an engine I need to add to my roster

This is a great little engine. I have a real problem in getting the tender shell back on after installing the decoder!
