Has anyone had success in priming and painting the Walthers streamline passenger cars ? If so what primer was successful ? My standbys of Krylon and Rust O’elum primers have crazed the plastic. Any advice would be appreciated.
Campbellrd,
The Walthers cars are easy to refinish using the acrylic and solvent based model paint products available. I’ve had no problems in using properly thinned Polyscale, Testors Acryl, and Scale coat II primer/paint materials on the Walthers cars. For “stainless steel” metalizing I always Scale Coat II.

For all other paint schemes I have had good success with Pollyscale and TA primers/ paint products.
Although they’re great for refinishing structures, I would not recommend using Krylon or Rustoleum primers on today’s HO/N scale passenger cars as their solvents can attack some plastics, especially if sprayed on wet.
It’s understandable that, for the money, the big spray cans of Krylon and Rustoleum supply much more primer/paint material than than the 1 or 2 oz bottles of modeler’s paint products. However, in scenarios such as these the modeler’s paint products wind up giving you the best finish for your hard efforts. This is why I will go ahead and pay $4.00 to $6.00 for Pollyscale or Scale Coat products. It’s worth the smile I get after I finish painting a passenger car. [8D]
(OK, I used to cringe for 2 seconds at the cash register, but felt good afterwards for purchasing a reliable product ) [:P]
Specifically, which paint scheme are you attempting to apply on your Walthers cars? Are these lightweights or heavy weights?

Thanks for the information and advice. I’ll give this try.
The paint scheme is for the Bluegrass Model Railroad Club. We have five operational layouts running at the Kentucky Horse Park Southern Lights Christmas Display. Run from the day after Thanksgiving till the day before New Years. Wanted to get a few apinted and detailed interiors before the running begins.

Camp,
I hope the info will be helpful. I was curious and googled your club. http://bgrrc.org/
Your club’s herald on top of the web page (between the two trains) has the colors: Greenish-Yellow background, Dark Blue on the curved triangle, and Bright Green on the steamer and the letters of the club’s name.
I must admit that to me it’s unusual, but interesting as the Greenish-Yellow reminds me a bit of Chicago and Northwestern’s. Are these the colors that you’re going to use as a color scheme for your cars, or are you applying a different combination?
