Walthers REA transfer building

I just got the Walthers REA Express transfer building.I got it because of it’s size that will fit on a specific spot on my layout. I want to make it a paint factory, any suggestions of what i need to add to the building to make it a paint factory?

You should get the “Sherwin Williams Paint” illuminated sign from Miller Electronics.

Then there would be no question about it.

I would suggest that you consider adding some raw material handling and storage outside the building if you have room. Paint making involves both liquids (lots of them) and dry materials (pigments, cans, barrels…etc.). That gives you the opportunity to bring in tank cars as well as freight cars.

If you don’t have room outside the building you could model a few vertical tanks and lots of piping inside the building that would be visible through the windows. They could realistically go right to the roof. Part of the loading docks could be replaced with tank car handling facilities that route the bulk liquid loads directly into the plant at track level. All you would need there would be a few large hookup hoses connected to the wall of the factory, and some valves.

Depending on the era, you could mount a water tower on the roof as part of the fire control system.

There is also the opportunity to model a few interesting and perhaps colourful spills![}:)]

If you want to be a bit whimsical you could severely weather the exterior and fade the wall signs - get it? A paint factory that can’t be bothered using paint[(-D]!

Show us what you come up with!

I do have the Sherwin Williams sign, thats why i’m making it a paint factory. I love the sign.I’m going to try your ideas. I also have the Miller Engineering “Rexall” sign, needless to say my DPM building will be a drug store.I got some good interior parts for it from Faller. I’ll be glad to show it.

My thoughts: add lots of venting, standpipes for fire protection water delivery, fire escape ladders etc. You might also want to consider that a paint factory receives loads that might not be boxcars. Someone mentioned the need for storage as well.

Going to Google Images and typing in paint factory came up with some interesting stuff, including this photographer’s website – with some interior shots of an abandoned paint factory

I sometimes railfan near a paint factory and can testify that the smell of paint is in the air for miles around. Either there would no residences near your model, or they’d likely be low end.
