Walthers Roundhouse Info ?

I’m trying to make a choice between the modern Walthers roundhouse (933-2901) or the older one (933-3041).

I understand the dimensional differences, and that is why the older (smaller) one appeals to me. I’m wondering if the level of detail on the older one is inferior to the newer one. In particular, does the older one have interior brick detail?

I have 12 stalls worth of the 3041 Roundhouse. There is no interior brick detail. If you choose the older one, I don’t think you will be disappointed. The sheer size requirements for the modern roundhouse exclude it’s use on all but the largest layouts.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I’ll use brick sheet to add some more detail to the smaller kit.

Now the challenge is to find two of the kits…

Is it my imagination or are more Walthers kits then ever discontinued and/or out of stock?

If you’ll check in the Walthers catalog, you’ll find that the rear wall of both the Modern and the older style roundhouse buildings are the same distance from the turntable pit. The Modern roundhouse stalls are longer, which means the front of the stall sits closer to the turntable pit. At the rear of the buildings, they are the same size.

Something for you to consider.

I don’t have a Walthers catalog, but in reading a prior post here, it was stated that the rear wall of the older roundhouse is 26" from the pit center, whereas the rear wall of the modern roundhouse is 30" or 32", depending on which stall is being measured.

So, the catalog shows it different from that? Also, are they both based on 10 degree radial track spacings?

Red Baron,

I erred in my previous post. I was thinking about the 2 different size turntables. According to the catalog, the modern roundhouse stall length is 17 3/4" long. If you use the stall extension, the stall depth increases to 20 1/8". The older style roundhouse has stall lengths of 14". Both buildings will sit 11 15/16" from the center of the turntable. This is where my error was. If you use the 90’ turntable, the distance from the lip of the pit will be greater than if you use the 130’ turntable. Both buildings are based on 10 degree track spacings.

So, the old style roundhouse rear wall will be 25 15/16" from the center of the turntable and the modern roundhouse rear wall will be 29 11/16" from the center of the turntable. If you extend the stall, the rear wall would be 32 3/16" from the center of the turntable.

I apologize for any confusion I may have caused. My LHS has several of the old style roundhouse kits in stock if you’re interested.

No confusion, Don. Actually, you gave me a much better picture of the differences between the two.

If your local hobby shop has two in stock, could you email me with their contact info? They seem to be harder to come by. Thanks!
