Walther's Turntable Upgrade Pit Construction

I recently purchased the Walther’s Built Up HO 90’ turntable (933-2849) to replace my old Walther’s HO 90’ turntable (with motor kit) since I am tired of trying to get the tracks to line up and want the ease of indexed track alignment.

Since I already have a 12 5/8" diameter hole cut out for the original turntable with the roundhouse tracks all perfectly aligned, how do I widen it to the required 12 3/4" diameter needed for the new turntable and still keep the tracks aligned? I was going to just use a router bit to shave off the 1/16" needed all the way around but the turntable will likely no longer be centered.

Any thoughts or tips would be appreciated.

John.

Have you tried the pit to see if that 1/8 inch is critical? It may just fit perfectly without shaving away any more benchwork.

I would try Pete’s idea first. Chances are, it will be close.

What’s you’re layout made of? I’m guessing plywood, in which case I would go with some coarse-grit sandpaper applied by hand to shave of a small amount. If you’re willing to use a router, try an electric pad sander. You’ll have to use the tip, mostly, as the flat pad won’t get into that circle, but it will make about the same huge mess as a router, maybe less, and will be faster than hand sanding.

Or, if you do end up with a hole that’s a bit too big, you can always shim it with cardboard or cardstock to get just the right fit.
