Walthers wooden caboose

I just purchased a walthers model of a chineese red wooden CBQ caboose.
Does anyone know what color to paint the hand rails and such.

There are several good photos of these cars in the CBQ section of the Fallen Flags site: http://www.rr-fallenflags.org

The cars had black trucks and underbodies; everything else, including hand grabs and ladders, was painted Chinese Red.

Hey thanks John. This should help me with the model. The next thing is mixing paints to get the right color.

it wouldn’t have to be a perfect match because the paint would probably get worn away quickest there and would need to be repainted. Reds tend to fade so it doesn’t have to quite right - a bit redder is fine, it’s weathering!

Hey didn’t think of that. I am modeling 1969 so that paint scheme was almost gone, which means they must not have repainted it any time soon. Getting excited, can’t wait to get it finished! thanks for all the infromation.

Hi,

I’m modeling the Burlington (CB&Q) in 1969, too! Can you share info on your layout and ops, etc. here or off list to me at kozys@insightbb.com?

My focus is on a section of the Burlington double-track mainline “somewhere” between Chicago area and Galesburg in Illinois. In addition, I also will have a proto-freelanced rural branchline I call the Illiniwek River Branch. This is all in HO and in an area of approximately 24 by 38 feet in my basement.

Take care,

hey cbq_guy sorry I haven’t got back to you. I’ve been really buisy and all. I’m actually starting to lay track and fini***he rest of my benchwork right now. I have cars stored away for when I get it running. [planning on before December if all possibe] I have a 10 by 14 foot room. With bookshelves on one side of the room. Hope to get more infromation to you soon. How about you?

Hi,

I almost missed this for some reason so now I apologize for not getting back to YOU sooner.

I should mention that I seem to be stuck in the room prep stage for the past few years because of mainly medical/physical problems but now hopefully I can get back to finishing that up and actually start building the layout.

You mentioned something about the paint scheme almost being gone. Not sure what you meant but they had the Chinese Red in use until “the end” when in March of 1970 they were merged into the newly created BN. Of course there where still some as yet un(re)painted, old blackbird, black and gray scheme locos running around right up until the end, too.

Don’t know if you’re aware, but in 1969 the CB&Q bought some SD-45’s which were painted in an experimental green black and white paint scheme in anticipation of the merger. There is a picture of one of these locos at http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/cbq/cbq530.jpg I have two I had custom painted a year ago but just recently, I think it was Proto 2000 who came out with one. These were delivered in February of 1969!

They also had a GE, U23-C delivered in this paint scheme, too, but none are available as an HO model at this time.

Finally, here are a couple caboose photos you might be interested in…Enjoy and write when you can.
