Then you should check here and think about going to school. Sounds like an interesting proposition!
Its great the railroads are doing well and hiring so many people. I just hope all these new hires dont find themselves furloughed for 3 years when business slows down.
Its not just business cycles, but anyone looking to get their foot inside the door so to speak, should be aware that the labor culture within the industry is going to be changing over the next decade and its not good from a labor standpoint. Two major carriers have just reached labor agreements w/BLE that contains wording on the carriers right to convert some mainline trains to engr only operation. This most likely is not real soon, but as upgraded automatic train control systems are put into use, this will change the job functions like the industry has never seen before. It has me worried, hate to see it and i would hate to see folks spend thousands of dollars to go to so called train college, only to be put out of work in a few yrs. Just some thought for what it may be worth.
The article claims their looking for electrical and diesel technology grads. Sounds like technicians, MOW, and mechanics, and such, not road crews.
