Im looking to buy a Lionel SD-80MAC diesel this holiday season and i just have a few questions.
Fist off, this is a true 1:48 scale locomotive, right??? (and no im not talking about the lionmaster version) … it will look at home with all 1:48 scale rolling stock???
Im looking to get into 1:48 scale locos and rolling stock, and im also looking to getting into TMCC/DCS … so my first step this year i think is to buy a locomotive, and since i dont have any deisels yet, i think this is the one i want.
The shiping year for this loco was 2002 according to the Lionel site … can i still purchase this loco, and does anyone know where i may be able to pick one up???
Try trainz.com they have a wish list that you put in the item # and they send you an e-mail when one becomes available. I was able to get a lionmaster class A that way after it had been out a few years.
Hello 92 ! Joe Gryzobski’s in Scranton,Pa may have one.He also has a website and is a very good place to do business with as he has new and discontinued Lionel. Good Luck.
The Lionmaster ones are about an inch or so shorter than the regular ones. Both are great. I have two Lionel NS big ones. They are BIG. Heavy engines and will pull. Takes big curves an switches as real long [like 18 1/2 inches].
I have the one that you pictured about.
Got it off Ebay for a grand total of $237.00
Runs GREAT and it is big but will take tight curves, great smoker and sound system.
It is bigger then the LIONMASTER.

great, thanks for the replyd guys!!! I know they are big length wise, i just wanted to make sure that they will look at home with 1:48 scale rolling stock … Its hard to tell just from pictures…
so are you guys running these with those rolling stock and everything looks ok???
Laz, when i saw it in person awhile back(just cant remember as much cause i wasnt intrested in buying anything then) i do remember i was really impressed with the sound system!!!
I have one of the full scale ones and most of what I run them with is O27 sized rolling stock.
This really is one big engine. I do know, though, from personal experience that it will travel on O31 curves. If you remove the lantern and bulb from O22 switches, it can also travel through the curved segment of those. It looks absolutely horrible doing either one(the fuel tank almost passes the inner rail), but it will run.
I usually run mine on O72, although it still looks bad.
Here’s a shot of my SD on the layout. One tech tip for you: They come with 2 speakers in the “fuel tank”. Make sure the wires from one speaker to the next form an “X”, if not resolder them for proper sound. Jon

I think maybe ill send Lionel an Email, and see if they will do the work of hunting the one i want down for me. AtlasO offered to hunt down something i was looking for and maybe lionel will too!
Lionel says they cant help me locate the loco! Maybe ill be going with the AtlasO gp60 instead. I emailed AtlasO with a few questions ans their response was lightning fast and top notch. If thats the customer service that i can expect from Atlas they may have founf a new customer.
Maybe ill wait to get a bigger Deisel when a newer version that i like comes out and is more readily available???
Oh decisions decisions… anyone else find that sometimes its so hard to decide which loco you want to buy???
