My Athearn SW7 DC Switcher came to me from a retired fellow Train Club Member, who had fitted it with a Can Motor . It runs very well, but on maintenance I found the cause of a small noise was a partly broken Slotted Coupling.Checking the original sheet,I see it is part number 41017. Athearn Spare Parts do not show it, though I have found this service very helpful in the past. I have bought spare and detail parts from a couple of U.S. eBay stores, but once again none available. The noise is tolerable compared to our beloved old reliable Athearns, but I would like to find this part. Any clues from our members ?
Contact Athearn Parts Dept. even if it’s not shown online. I believe there are a number of older parts like this they are likely to have in stock, but just haven’t been put in the computer because of their age and non-use in recent production.
An alternative is to simply get driveline components from NWSL and build a new driveshaft.
As Mike stated contact Athearn parts department because Athearn does not list all their parts on line.
Thank you both for that advice. I will follow through to Athearn Parts Department.
Athearn may re-direct you to these people:
Horizon Hobby, Inc. | 4105 Fieldstone Rd | Champaign, IL 61822 | United States 800.338.4639.
I got gear axle’s from them 3 months ago, best by phone. Some people say they no longer deal with Athearn, but I don’t know if that is true or not.
Frank
Frank,Horizon no longer deals with model trains on their web page…They handed that operation back to Athearn.
Simply put Horizon deals with R/C models and Athearn handles the trains…
Brakie,
Why does Athearn Parts still show Horizon Hobby on their web page? Behind the times?
I wonder why Horizon sent me a new 2014 Athearn trains catalog, with My parts order?
Frank
I just went to the Athearn home page and selected parts. It takes me to an Athearn parts page with no mention of Horizon Hobby. I also am looking at the Horizon Hobby home page and see no reference to Athearn, trains, or associated parts of any kind.
It doesn’t hurt to ask, but that slotted coupling is shown as sold out: http://www.athearn.com/Search/Default.aspx?SearchTerm=slotted+coupling&OA=True
Sometimes when you search you have to make a filtered request, in this case “view retired models”.
Frank,Horizon was bought by a investment group last year and this group made the split.
If you check Horizons web page Athearn does not appear.
For Athearn products you now go to:
I guess they wanted to simplify things.
If the indicated part is indeed shown sold out, then you go to NWSL…
http://www.nwsl.com/uploads/chap2_web_04-2014.pdf
Go to page 2-3 for the driveline parts.
Larry,
I’M not disputing the information, one way or the other. My order to them and received Athearn parts along with the new catalog, the date was FEB. 5 2014, not quite, three months ago. If they made a split before that time, how did I get 24 axle’s gears from them, without them saying they don’t deal with Athearn anymore? That is my question, they wanted to keep it a secret and get rid of the parts. [*-)]

Scroll down to the bottom left of the page. Why is Horizon Hobby still there? Did they forget to remove it?
Have a Good One!
Respectfully,
Frank
Frank,
I don’t know if you’re expecting reality to be reflected on the internet or for the internet to reflect reality. Just because the internet says so doesn’t make it true…Most likely, since Horizon has just exited the retail train biz and left model railroading retail to Athearn, you’re simply seeing cruff that hasn’t been cleaned up yet by the IT Dept. Happens all the time, doesn’t mean a thing. The split happened back around the turn of the year, I don’t recall exactly. But it did happen. How they handle mailing lists, etc, I don’t know. Since you dealt in trains with them, you probably will still get a train catalog. It may even have been printed before the decision to do the split, but why waste all that paper…go ahead and send 'em out. No harm, no foul.
Frank,Horizon is still the owner of Athearn and its only natural that both web sites link each other.
I’m not sure when the split was made but,Athearn now has their own site and will sell direct.
Larry and Mike,
All I know is, my order was by phone. I got the number from Athearn Parts. I was expecting someone from Athearn, I got Horizon. I told them what I was looking for, they had in stock, shipped to me in three days. Feb. 05,2014. I do all my ordering by phone, not internet.
Frank [:D]
S.S. Express, I may be able to help, I think I’ve got a couple of those collecting serious dust in my parts bin. You’re welcome to them. contact me via messaging.
regards, Peter
A-Line offers a universal driveline set w/ all sorts of BB compatible universal parts. These are exact replacements that come in handy if you have a number of Athearn’s in your roster. The alternative is NWS that retrofits/ upgrades the universals to better more quiet type.
Hey Sunshine:
Send me your e-mail address to willyjon69@hotmail.com. There’s a website that I’m getting ready to order the Athearn 41014 HO Slotted Coupling for the SW7/F7. They come 6 to a pack. I’ll get your address and send you a coupling after I get them.
