Any ideas on scenery on a H-O 4’x8’ layout? I just have track glued down and a couple buildings. Any thing with scenery is good. Any ideas greatly appreciated.
Get some foam and build a moutain with a waterfall and a little lake.
If I did a 4X8, I would put a double sided backdrop down the middle to divide the layout into two distinct places. That gives you a lot of flexibility both scenicly and operationally. For example, one side could be a seaport and the other an inland town. You could have a town on one side and a rural area, lumber mill, or mine on the other. The backdrop also disguises the fact your trains are just going around and around. Instead they will seem to travel from point A to point B and back again.
Well, not knowing what you’re shooting for, I’ll make my answer broad.
Normally, I’d say to figure out the prototype or freelance RR, then scenery, then the businesses, then the track plan. But since we’re starting with the track plan…
I would probably start by figuring out what it is you mant to model.
City? Country? Mountains? Sea shore? Desert?
What interests you?
How about seasons? Most layouts are summer scenes, but I’ve seen some excellent ones set in other seasons. For summer season our own Joe Fugate has an EXCELLENT tutorial here: http://siskiyou-railfan.net/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?1270.0
Here’s some ides for winter stuff: http://www.trains.com/TRC/CS/forums/898892/ShowPost.aspx#898892

Fall is good if you can get the colors right…

First decide what kind of scenery you want. Then go to this clinic. You’ll not find better anywhere in book, print, or video.
WOW! Great minds think alike! (Or is that sick minds?) Look at my post.
