I picked up a C44-9W off E-bay cheap. Think it was around $25.00 with shipping. Listed as needing a good cleaning and as a MRC engine. Well with never owning a MRC I figuer I give it a try.
Frist the good news, weatherd well, metal grap rails, snow plow and ditch lights![:)]

Note on the bottom PIC KRG has been but on the bottom. I am Kenneth R Greenwell so I knew I should owe it.
I got today and found it has issues that at this point I am not sure where to start with. Frist thing I saw was the trucks be for I cracked the shell. Axles where loes, look like a Athearn truck to me. Brass bearings where not tight in the metal things that should hold them. Bearings are not the same thickness.

I cracked the shell and found the body has had weights added, that is a +

That is when I found it had Ditch Lights.
But then I saw this.

No fly wheels, not a big thing. But Motor looks like it has been glued in? Plus there is no way to clean the arm? Never seen that before! Then there is the odd rubber drive shaft.
It looks like an old Bachmann model or really old Athearn model. by the looks of it though, that motor has been replaced.
Opps, I cropped the PIC to much, but there are weights all across the top of the shell.
I have new toys shipped to work so the Better half does not get into my caboose. Tested it there with a transformer and it ran with no rails. Lubed it up and brought it home. Well it moved but made a heck of a racket. Pulled the rubber drive shaft thinking it was the problem but was not. With out the rubber drive shaft it just sat there making a racket.

I may be wrong but I think this is a engine that was bulit from left over parts. Bet in it day it was something as well. Guessing it is pretty much worn out and needs a over haul but not sure where or what part I need. 95% sure it has Athearn tucks but with never having a MRC it could just be a copy.
I have few Athearns FP-45’s that I am not using, good for parts?

It doesn’t look like an MRC. MRC did sell some DASH 9s, but they were made by Athearn. This one looks like it might be a very early Rail Power Products 8-40CW, but the shell doesn’t look as well proportioned as the RPP 8-40CWs I’ve seen on eBay. The frame is definately from RPP, and the trucks are right off of an Athearn FP45. The motor looks like a Proto Power West Mashima. I don’t know why drive tubing was used in there the way it was, but it would be best to replace it with an Athearn drive shaft. You might want to replace the railings with new ones later, because the current ones have all different heights of stancions, and the wire isn’t bent properly. One more thing, the rear pilot should be silver, not red.
And that’s about all I can tell you about it. Hope you have fun restoring it![:D][:D][:D]
Darth, thanks for some answers. I glued the rear drive shaft on to the worm gear and same with the rubber tube drice shaft. I think the main racket is from the trucks. I have a FP-45 dummy with no run time. If they will take the gears I will use them. If not, I have 4 Am tracks FP’s I am not using.
On the motor, good, bad or in driffrent about it?
All so being new to this hobby would you by chances have part numbers on the drive shafts? I try all my older part numbers and the Athearn sites does not have there number’s.

I bought a kit a few years ago that had a bunch of athearn universal joints and some long pieces of athearn drive shaft. I belive it was from A-line but I cant remember for sure. As for the motor, disconnect it from the trucks and see if it is good. If so add your new trucks and make your driveline from the A-line (?) kit and there you go.
Good luck.
Mashima Motors (like the one you have in that engine) are very nice motors. They are Low current and decently powerful. I would stick with it.
As for the rest it looks like an Athearn to me. the drive chain is definitely Athearn but i don’t know about the shell or frame.
Hi, Horizon hobbies may have the drive shafts your looking for, they have lots of Athearn parts. Go ahead and plan on spending some time there searching. Would be good if you can get some part #'s first.Good luck
Renegade1c, I all so thought it looked like a Athearn where the coupler boxes go. But the key thing it does not have is the holes on the bottom for the motor mounts.
Glad to here it is a good motor as well. I have a set of new Athearn fly wheels, will see if they will fit the motor, if so I may have drive shafts that will work.
All so thanks on the tip for the drive shafts as well.
All I can say I am very lucky I found this site. I started this jounery Feb of this year, funny thing I was looking for something simple and easy to do. Up to this point I was a 1:1 car guy but got sick of the head aches a 30 year old muscle car’s will get. Little did I know, I should have stuck with coin collecting! Never has a Morgan Silver Dollar go bad.[:)]
Thanks again and other help welcomed.
