The Ajax is refering to the Hand brake on the car . So it would be the B end of the car and up toward the the top of the car next to the ladder . I hope that helps .
The trains.com magazine index has gone away, but have no fear, LEIGHANT IS HERE. At least I’m here some of the time. The index I have been generating for some 35 years is very specific to my own interests: the Santa Fe in excruciating detail, freight cars of other railroads that woulkd be seen in Santa Fe trains, a time period up to about 1960— and my references are mostly to published articles and photos in print, not internet resources. Also, many of my references are to spewcialized Santa Fe publications. With that in mind-

I think the Ajax is actually a variety of metal box on the B end of the car to which bthe brake wheel is attached. This box converts the rotation of the hand brake wheel to a pull or release of a linear rod or chain which transmits the motion to the bottom of the car. So “below the Ajax” probably refers to below that box.
I apologize for the jumbled references. I have them typed in Word one one entry on each line. When I cut and paste into the trains.com message box, it shows all my information in lines. But when I post the message to the board, it kicks out all the spacing and jumbles stuff together. I think it will not do if everything is typed character by character direct into the message box, but it ignores line commands that are pasted in.
Hah! I hunted all over the place for this photo, only to discover that, while it’s the right car, it shows the wrong end. [banghead]
Regardless, the part referred to goes on the “B” or brake wheel end of the car. On gondolas, the brake platform is usually atop or near the top of the car’s end sill, and, like the brake wheel, to the left of the coupler when you view the car looking at its end. It’s where one would stand to operate the handbrake, and there’s often an opening in it through which the rod or chain connecting to the brake gear can pass. It’s not especially visible on this photo of a different gondola, equipped with a lever-type handbrake, but you can see it just beyond the car’s coupler, and atop the endsill.
There’s a slightly better view HERE - scroll down to the second picture and to the fourth picture. While the latter one shown is fairly high, it should give you an idea of where to install the part.
Thanks Wayne. I can just make it out in the 2nd photo you posted. I think by "step"m Tichy means to say “little angled ledge next to the coupler pocket”. I think i may be able to move forward now.
I guess I don’t know what kit you have, because the Tichy website does not list the kit number you posted, either. They do show a 4041 war emergency mill gondola. Is that what you have? Anyhow, there is a picture of the assembled model at their website, http://www.tichytraingroup.com/index.php?page=view_product.php&id=60&picture=4041_2. If you double click on the picture of the car end, you’ll get an enlarged view. I believe that you will see the platform you’re speaking of to the left of the lettering that says “IW Wrot Steel Wheels”.
