Warning to all magazine subscribers (including Kalmbach publications)

Around last year at this time I received a Trains magazine subscription renewal notice in the mail. It was not from Kalmbach. I did not think too much of it at first, mosly because so many companies these days outsource so much of their operations. But what bothered me was the fact that my subscription was not due for renewal, so I decided to investigate. I contacted Kalmbach to inform them of the notice. It turns out that the notice was a fraud.

I mention this because today I received some more of these subscription notices. One was for Popular Science, which I no longer subscribe to, and the other was for Model Railroader, which I have never subscribed to. I am going to contact Kalmbach again to inform them of this.

FYI: These notices came from a company called “Magazine Billing Center”, PO Box 2007; Simsbury, CT 06070.

This was in the forums last year, and here is a link to that thread: http://www.trains.com/community/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=34770

The last time I had renewed my subscription to Trains, I had received a notice from Kalmbach warning me about outfits like this, and it instructed me not to send payment for a subscription renewal to anyone other than Kalmbach Publishing, P.O. BOX so and so, Wakesha, Wisconsin. From time to time I get notices from bogus outfits telling me that my subscriptions to magazines such as Alaska Magazine, American Heritage and Popular Photography are due for renewal. These bogus notices get torn up or fed through my paper shredder. A good rule of thumb is: If it looks suspicious, it’s more than likely a fraudulent scheme to get money out of you.

Wow, thanks for the heads up! What will those guys think of next!!!

zardoz,

Thank You Very Much for reposting that warning,it is something that ALL
of us definitely need to be aware of !!

I recieved one of those again, and Kalmbach was promptly notified.

Zardoz,
Thanks for the WARNING, I did get one of those and it went bye-bye without it being opened at all.

Did you report this to the USPS?

Using the mails to commit fraud
is a felony.

Dave

Dave,
No, I did not. However, I offered the notices to Kalmbach in case they wi***o persue the matter.

This kind of stuff happens on the Internet all the time, so I guess it’s no surprise they would do it through the mail too. Seems like it would be pretty easy to trace though. They probably set up shop for a month or two, wait for the checks, then disappear.

Yes but what i would love to know is how they are getting our info that we subscribe to these mags. Is kalmbach letting all our info out to these people? I know they got to be sharing with some companies because after i started subscribing to MR and Trains i started to get other mags in the mail wanting me to order stuff. If this is the case then kalmback is just as guilty for the Fraud subscribtions as the companies that send them.
