I tried- honestly, I really tried…to use the " Search the Community" tool, but the results were so far from what I asked (wash formulas, decal washes) that, after 10 minutes, I gave up. [:'(]
So, I will ask: What is a good wash formula for use in making fresh new decals (logos and lettering sequences) appear faded and aged. I want to do this with a hand brush tip (flat angled) on some small decals already applied to a surface.

If it’s black lettering on a light background, a wash of white would help fade the black to gray, as well as fade the base color.
To age white lettering, you could mix up some paint to match the base color of the freight car. Then dry brush some on to make it look like the base color is showing through. You could also add some white streaks below the logo to make it look as if the paint has run.
You might want to use artist oils. They take a long time to dry giving you plenty of time to work it.

For a small area, you should mix up a wash of the background color, very thin. You could also make a very thin white wash with a small flat brush very dry, and gently pull some white down from the lettering to simulate the white running down, but that might be overdoing it. I would definitely recommend, however that if possible, you should use an airbrush to apply the background color wash…
