Washouts disrupt BNSF service in Iowa, Missouri

Southwest Chief is re-routing via the UP towards St. Louis.

Does this mean we might see the Zephyr on the Rochelle reailcam?

I live on the STL - KC UP line. I wonder what time the westbound would be coming through mid-MO?

The “Southwest Chief” could take advantage of the 110 mph speed allowance on the Lincoln service route between St. Louis and Chicago to compensate for lost time.

The “Southwest Chief” could take advantage of the 110 mph speed allowance on the Lincoln service route between St. Louis and Chicago to compensate for lost time.

That’s only if the lead unit is equipped with ITCS

Take advantage of the 110 mph speed limit for what, a whole 18 miles?

110 MPH with Superliners huh? Last I checked their speed limit was 90 or 100, but not 110. The Chief makes 90 on the Santa Fe every day in Missouri.

The Zephyr has been rerouted over UP across Iowa many times due to floods. The flooding on the former Santa Fe is less common. Could the Chief run via West Quincy or is it under water too? Or is the West Quincy line out because BNSF hotshots are being routed that way? Any info on BNSF freight detours?

Actually, the Alton Route through Bloomington is still going through massive bridge rebuilding and so it will probably take the C&EI through Illinois.

A week ago my daughter was coming from Mt. Pleasant, Iowa to Denver for a family gathering. Because of the flooding on the BNSF main line near Ottumwa, she was bused to Omaha and left at the tiny Amtrak station at midnight. My daughter said she was given no information on what was happening, only that a train MIGHT be there from 7:00-9:00 AM (too late for our family’s gathering). I called Amtrak and talked with a very pleasant customer service agent who explained everything, arranged a refund, and we had to spring for a plane ticket from Omaha to Denver at 3x the cost. My daughter said that families had to cancel their vacations and ride a bus back east. As much as I love Amtrak and train travel, I am disappointed that there was no bus service continuing west. What happened to the train supposedly coming on the C&NW/UP tracks?
