waste containers

Just got my copy of the Jan MRR and in the article on how to detail modern roof in the picture they show modern wastes bins or containers blue square ones. Anybody know if someone makes these? Emailed the editors but thought someone here may know.

Thanks,

Gary

Hi Gary,

I wrote the article. To make the trash dumpsters I took photographs of all four sides and the lid of a real one, cleaned them up with a photo editor and then printed them to size on matte photo paper. I sprayed the back of the photo paper roof brown. After that I cut the sides out and glued them together in a box shape to form the dumpster.

For another source, if you know anybody has a collection of older model railroad magazines, the August 1982 issue of Railroad Model Craftsman had a three page article on scratchbuilding two types of dumpsters, a roll-on type, and an open mouthed type with a slightly slanted top.

I also believe scanning through the Walther’s catalog, you will find at least one kit containing several assorted dumpsters by IIRC JLL Innovative Designs

I did build some dumpsters from styrene some time ago. The dimensions of several different kind could be found with Google. If I remember correct mine are build after a Seattle prototype.

California Freight and detail makes resin dumpsters both with closed lids and full of trash and open. Honestly it shouldn’t be to hard to make your own though with some tips here.
