well i seem to have stumbled upon photo evidence (ok wctransfer sent me the image) and it’s unfortunate that CN has begun shipping the WC SD45 units to the scrapper. the image showed them all in a row ready to be scrapped. it just seems so tragic to see these great machines go to waste like this. i think at least one should be preserved. agree? disagree? thoughts?
NO!!!
If I am not mistaken (which has happened on more than one occasion) the WC SD45’s have been downrated and no longer had the 20 cylinder engines in them. They are also hand me downs from a number of railroads and are probably significantly altered. Isn’t the GN Hustle Muscle an SD45 that is preserved?
maybe. i’m not entirely sure. if it is, then great! i’m just gonna miss at least WC6620. i had my high school senior pictures taken on it. i would go as far as calling that machine a friend
The WC SD45s still have the 20 cylinder blocks, are slowly being scrapped one by one, and if I’m not mistaken, they’re only putting out 3300hp as to not break the crankshaft.
GN 400 Hustle Muscle is preserved, I believe, at the museum in Duluth, and if not there, it’s somewhere around there.
And I don’t think they should be preserved…yet. I think they should be run for another 5-10 years, then be scrapped with a few preserved, some repainted in former road colours…I know it’s not that realistic, but I like my plan.
Well, maybe they arent putting out as much ok i know they arent but they give more than 3,300. They just lowered the RPM, not the horsepower. Im not a engine guy (i dont know much about the guts) but they still should give close to 3,600.
Max,Matt, and all of the people who know me know i love the SD45s, specifically Maroon and Gold. I care not to get into this matter because it makes me feel bad, and just doesnt make my day go well. Sad thing is CN is pricing the SD45’s WAY TOO HIGH! Thats why no one will buy them. So i dont think CN will even try selling them.
Alec
your day? tch, all i could think about today was “six six two zero”. it wouldnt leave my head. my buddy’s going to the scrapper and there’s nothing i can do about it!
WC SD45s just plain look the best. Alec is right. i have so many memories with WC6620. and i hate to see it go. but in reality, CN’s new units just plain out-perform the SD45. i just dont think they need to be scrapped. i KNOW they have uses. somewhere or some place. i wi***hey didnt cost so much. i know of a very tiny company called wisconsin Northern who could have greatly benefited from even ONE of these units
Here in Homewood, Illinois (south burbs of Chicago) WC would bring in a transfer to Woodcrest yard on the IC. They would then back out of the south end of the yard with the returning cars onto the northbound main and when clear would leave town like there was a tsunami bearing down on them. It was usually two SD45s and there are legions of us that love them. in my mind they are an elegant looking design and there was no bad paint scheme on them.
i know. the hustle muscle looks the same only with different colors, am i right?
i think at least one WC SD45 should be preserved as a historical “artifact”. i know there’s a WC unit on display at the Green Bay train museum. i just cant remember what type of locomotive it was. hopefully SD45…
WC 715 is there, GP30, old SOO Line unit. And, there is a ex WC GP30 # 700 (ex soo) repainted in SOO colors in Duluth.
Alec
They kept the v20 645 prime movers but just downrated their turbochargers so that they were rated at 3000hp not 3600 as the Hustle Muscle is. The #400 is at the Minnesota Transportation Museam…[;)]
i dont like your sig image… those jerks killed my friend
odd that the hustle muscle has more hp for being older
I’m sorry to say this but I doubt they even ment to kill your friend. Just like the 95 percent of the accidents out there your friend probably tried to beat the train. It is not the Canadian National’s fault. Like I said I’m sorry I came and said this to you but it’s probably true and if not please quote me. It would be the same thing if your friend was hit by a BNSF train. You would blame them for it.
I’m sorry for your loss.
James
And being repainted

I’m very sorry that he was killed by the CN and It’s not like I planed it as a offence to you…was he in a car? Well did ya ever think that the engineer was mentally hurt by killing him…not like the train can swerve out of the way…I’M SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS but don’t cry to me about it.[V][V][V][V][V][V][V][V][V][V][V][V][V][V][V][V][V][V][V][V][V][V][V][V][V][V][V][V][V][V][V][V][V][V][V][V]
Hahaha, guys, you took him all wrong. The 6620, WC SD45, was his “friend”. He got his high school grad. shots on it. HAHAHAHAHA!!!
Alec
ROTFLMAO!!![(-D][(-D][(-D][(-D][(-D][(-D]
oh man…[xx(][xx(][xx(][xx(][xx(][}:)][}:)] You guys are mean now. That was not funny. We thought he was complaining because one of his friends at school was killed or something.
Thats not funny!!!

Alec, do you know what the price is on the SD45’s they tried selling. I know a shortline that is always looking for diesels.

Most short lines don’t need 3,600 hp plus the extra 4 cyclinders adds alot of maitenence costs…A gentalman I know named Dan Bought a GP35 for 20,000 and its # was WC2555, I belive that it was ex. SOO LINE any whay he sold it a year or two ago, but He said at the oction he was at the big 645’s were going for 50,000 whitch we think is expensive but a SD70ACe is about 2 million so I guess its a bargin. plus thw SD45 is not a very desirable engine every one whants SD40s…so I think the Sd45 price has raised to well over 100,000 dollers …remember this was a large auction with loco’s from all across the CN system and it was years ago so the prices have changed since then
