We moved and I finally unpacked the trains

We moved several weeks ago and I finally had a chance to unpack the trains. I count myself blessed!!! There were only a few damages handrails (easily fixed) on a few engines and some couplers were damaged (easily replaced).

Does anyone have any train moving experiences that they would like to share?

Glad to hear you’re getting the trains out. Are you going to be building a layout at your new place?

Yes, but not for a while. The only place I have to set something up is in the garage. That has to be cleaned out of boxes, etc. I can’t set up anything permanent as I use the grage for other things. I wanted to try building something modular; something like the Free-mo guys do but for my garage. I could set it up and break it down, etc.

Before attempting to build and kind of layout I am going to try my hand at custom painting a loco. I just purchased an SD40, undecorated, off of ebay. I want to paint it SP. I’m going to practice on some fieght cars first before attempting the engine.

Take care,

After a long while of no railroad my son came along and he has trains on the brain. So I dug all of the stuff I had as a kid out and we are currently building a pike. Even after 15 years I still remember that I also have trains on the brain. It was also neat to see what advances have taken place while I was away from the hobby.

I got my trains out shortly after we moved to our house a few years ago. Fortunatly, all my trains were too cheap to take much damage.[:)]

My trains lived in boxes for 35 years, first in my Mom’s basement, and then in two attics of my own. Now, each locomotive, building or piece of rolling stock is like an old friend. Some will no doubt be monsters returned from the grave, haunting me with the same spontaneous derailments as before. They’ll cost a small fortune to re-equip with new trucks, Kadee’s and decoders. Still, it’s not many of us that can pull so much of their childhood back.

Where did you move to? Still in So Cal?

PS —Good luck painting that SD-40.

I’m right in the middle of a major move, just hope some of the “stuff” arrives safely.

Hi Sean, good to hear that the trains have landed safely.

I swear that I will never move again.

The last time was 6 years ago. I was just starting to build a new layout at my old house, and had finally unpacked everything from the previous move 5 years earlier, when my now ex wife and I decided to build our dream house with my dream train room. For weeks I packed the trains, about 1000 pieces, and shlepped them to a storage locker, where they stayed for more than a year.

Finally the new house was complete enough to where I could move them again, but it took almost 2 more years before I could unpack I still have things packed, but I don’t plan on using those pieces. Now I need to decide what to do with all of that stuff, because it is starting to get in the way of construction. I’m giving serious thought to eBay, and using the procedes to help finance construction and a new loco roster.

This first photo was taken 27 months ago, March 2003. The unpacking was just starting. The second photo is from January of 2004, with construction well under way. the third photo was taken yesterday. As of about a month ago I have a loop of track running.
