Weathering a Steam locomotive

ok Aggro- I took the plunge and this is my first crack at weathering a steam locomotive. I chose my C&O Heavy Mountain as my guinie pig.

So everyone, and especially you Aggro (I really admire your weathering of Steam locos). How did I do? Good? Bad? ok? Go get a new one??? [:)] please share your thoughts.

Well I dunno what Aggros is gonna say but I think it looks great. Well Done.
Brad

Looks pretty darn nice to me. What techniques did you use?

Very nicely done! With everyone doing Aggro-trees and now doing Aggro-steamers, what’s he gonna do to keep out in front?

Good job. Can you get a few more rusty spots or streaks higher up, dripping down at plate joins on the boiler?

I like it. How old is it supposed to be? The J-2 is a passenger loco, so it wouldn’t be too dirty. I think see a drybrush and airbrush job.

I’ve seen how good your diesels are, so steam should be easy for you. [tup]

I don’t know. I think I’m out of ammo…[(-D]

Ah’yep you were smart enough to not use a heavy hand,A light coat of weathering is the smart way to go …you can aways add more if it seems appropriate but you can’t undo paint job gone wrong unless you start all over…GOOD JOB!

looks real nice , you can tell the engine has been used but there’s still some maintainance and cleaning going on

AWESOME! With all these threads on steam weathering, I may just have to go out and by an airbrush…

Thanks everyone!

up_santsfe-
I used Airbrush and wet brush, and a little but not much “dry brush”

selector-
will do on that rust… [:)]

Aggro-
Your right J-2 were used for passenger service, and a little frieght I have a few photos of one (or two) pulling coal (no suprise) but in all the photos they were pretty darn dirty this one is suppose to be OLD. I run GP7’s and 9’s on my layout and by then most if not all steam was GONE on the C&O by the 50’s to 60 so it needed to look a little worse for wear.

Thanks everyone for all your feedback and encouragement, I’ll post photos of my
2-6-6-2 and mike when I get them weathered.

Still learning… [:)]

Now thats COOL! Very nice. Where did you find color photos of C&O steam?

C&O in Color Volume 1 & 2
Mainly Volume 1

Great books for modelers I also reccommend “C&O Frieght and Passenger Equipment in color” also a great reference for the C&O modeler. You can get them (insert sales pitch here) at the C&O Historical Society

zist a loodle more dit. Well your’e way better than me.
