What is the best or easist way to weather heavily the paint on a athearn loco? rambo1…
rambo thats a good question. I’m not that good at weathering myself. I have attempted to weather in the past, I dont like how it looks but others think its ok.
My best guess would be to weather them like you do any other piece.

tom. i jst want to make the paint on the loco look very warn out any ideas? rambo1…
Rambo, Something I do from time to time is I’ll paint a model a base color, sya, grey. Then I’ll spray a very thin coat of paint of say, red, over that. I’ll then lightly sand it in areas with a very fine grit sandpaper, 600 grit, maybe finer. This usually gives the viewer the impression that locomotive has been through the mill and is due for a trip to the paint shop.
Hope this helps.
rambo have you done a search of the forums here? theres a lot of threads on painting and weathering alone. some techniques i have attempted and others i havent. i also believe theres a thread on fading paint.

rambo.try spraying with dullcote first, let it dry, then give it a wash with alcohol, the paint will really look faded, if you don’t like the look, just redo the dullcote and faded lokk disappears.if you like the results then dust the body with chalks, black around exhaust, browns around dynamics and pilots, trucks, whites by battery boxes.
