Weathering Black

I have a lot of black on my locomotives, and I am just getting started in weathering. What techniqes should someone use to weather black? Because if you use black to simulate exhaust from the diesel eninge it wouldn’t show up because you are doing it on an already black surface. If if helps I am useing chalk. Thanks for your help.

Use dark grey. Black weathers to a dark grey, so that’s the best way, it also shows details better than straight black.

Try using grey. A darker grey would probably work best. If you don’t have grey then you can make some by mixing black and white. This way you can control how dark or light you want your weathering to be.

Various shades of gray work well, as does dirt, grime, and rusts. Anything to pick out detail in all-black engines helps, but be sure not to overdo it, since several areas on engines always stay pretty dark and shiny.

dark gray and floquil’s “grimy black” work well

The first step here is Polly S rust drybrushed.

Thanks!!!
