Weathering corrugated Siding

Any ideas on weathering Northeastern Scale Lumber corrugated siding? I’ve tried washes but they seem to just run off the siding without leaving any color residue - tried both acrylic and oils. I’m trying to just dull the finish. Thanks.

Have you tried using good old dull coat? If you don’t want to use that how about a very very mild acid maybe vinegar

either spray dullcote–spray lightly to build up to what you want, or have you tried an alcohol based wash? If you just want to dull it you could just use the alcohol on it’s own----

Hi: Have you tried weathering powders, Bar Mills or Bragdon?

Both Barry and Grampys have excellent suggestions–Dullcote and then Bragdon or Bar Mills powders. The powders are self-adhesive and the Dullcote gives them a good undercoat to ‘stick’ to. I’ve used Bragdon powders for ‘weathering’ one of my Grandt Line corrugated buildings, after giving it a coat of Dullcote, and the results worked very well. The Grandt Line kit is styrene, but the same technique works very well on wood. I use the Bragdon weathering powder/Dullcote method on wood, plastic and even my brass locos, and I swear by it.

The photo is of wood siding. For that I used the Railroad Tie and Bridge Stain from Micro-Mark. Sometimes two treatments are necessary to get it dark enough.

If you’re asking about corrugated metal siding, printed circuit board etching solution from Radio Shack works good. You have to watch it very carefully and quickly remove it from the etchant as soon as it gets to the shade you want, though, and immediately put it under running water to stop the etching, or it will be turned into a black cinder.

Just to confirm, we are talking about the shiny metal foil corrugated material?

It really depends on the look you are trying to achieve? For most of my applications it is far too shiny so rather than starting with Dullcote, I give it a coat of paint, usually a light grey to give the effect of adonizing. Then when it is dry you can use paints and or powders to give the effect of rust streaks and break through rust.

This structure has a light weathering treatment.

There is a technique using the rather nasty electronics etching liquid that results in heavily weathered and corroded panels. I have not used it myself, but have seen impressive results from this method.
