We have all seen some brilliant examples of weathered Locos (both steam and diesel) and of course some brilliant freight car weathering, but does anyone have any tips, or favoured methods of weathering Heavyweight passenger cars? Photos and detailed text of the process would be much appretiated!
Up until very near the end of service most railroads made every attempt to keep their passenger equipment spotless. It was free advertising you know. During a long distance trip dust would accumulate on running gera and the appertances hanging from the bottom of the car. So depending what you are modeling and whether you model an area at the beginning of a run or thr end of a run you should probably just leave it at a slight amount of dust on the trucks and underbody. Near the end of service the railroads basically tried to make service as undesirable as possible to send passngers away. That way they could claim insufficient ridership to warrant running trains and get ICC apporval to discontinue them.
Don’t forget to heavily weather the underframes and roofs, neither of which were really ever cleaned. Most passenger treminal car washers had spray nozzles on the tops and sides, but brushes on the sides only. The roofs of most passenger cars (especially during the steam era) quickly turned sooty black.
