I recently acquired a set of Doc O’Brien’s weathering powders (Micro Mark). I am having a bit of trouble getting them to adhere to some surfaces and handling them on others. What is your favorite technique for weathering and do you use the powders successfully? For example, I am trying to weather the molded brick platform of a mission style depot model.
BTW, thank you all for help with the track nail removal – by using the rail as a fulcrum I was able to safely pry up the nails to make my repair.
Many thanks in advance,
Chris
Chris, I use Bragdon weathering powders. I have found that a light coat of Dullcote will give slippery surfaces some tooth to help weathering powders adhere. Once I get the effects I want, I seal the car with another coat of Dullcote.
Chris, I use the Dullcote (of course) but also find that a little pressure - getting the powder IN the tiny indentations in the DC that make it dull, helps a lot.
As Chris notes, a little pressure/ and almost scrubbing the powders will help, You don’t always have to seal the powders, especially if the piece won’t get much handling. Recoating will many times cause the powders to go a bit tranpanent and much of your work will not show. Just experiment to get what you want. Go easy at first and do check the work under different lighting. I used to be way too heavy handed w/ the Braegdon powdwers at first and scrubbed down a few pieces w/ soap/ water. Can always add more.
