weathering tips

Does anyone have any simple weathering tips? I don’t like airbrushing or anything like that. Chalk or paint would be the best.

I very simple weathering is black/brown powder and flat spary. It give at least an imagination of used equipment.

Or just paint the model a darker shade of the colour in the first place, a bit of rust on the boggies is ok. thin it with turps, then rub the dark stuff off the surface feature, so only the groves have the dirt, works for me. have you tried water colours? dull coat everything afterward too. Danny

try an advanced search for weathering here i came up with a lot of pages on weathering several months back

I use earth colors of flat Latex house paint. Thin with water and brush on freight cars or structures. Detailed information on my webpage below…

Myself, I prefer chalks, but the powders are good too.

This picture is a done with a acholol/water wash. Unfrontatly, some of the detial is lost in the picture. I more or stumbled into the formual for me which has been great.

I have a bottle of 91% acholol cut with about 30/40% water with india ink as the darkening agent. I aplly a light coat to the car but continue brushing until it begins to dry. I admit, I blow alot on it to help it dry fster. More you brush, the darker and more pronoucned the effects. If gives the “rained” on look quite well. I have seen this commom on covered hoppers as they would have powders above getting washed down due to rain. There some concrete hoppers that work a concrete plant close to there that the cars make this one look clean!

Take a look at www.modeltrainsweathered.com Those guys are good and they do a lot without airbrushes. They have a forum and a tips page.
