I have been getting great results by wathering with powdered pastells. My question is, is it necessary to spray it with dullcoat or any other sealer when compelted? I’ve spray-sealed powder in the past and I dont particularly like the result. It seems to dry much too dark and it never looks as good as just drybrushing the powder alone.
As long as the structure is not handled, is there any long-term problem by just brushing the powder with no sealer? Or is there another spray sealer that would not water down the drybrushed powder? Like hairspray?
Any kind of sealer will change the look. Most people apply numerous coats with sealer between them. There are different types of artist’s sealers used on pastel drawings. some leave a rough surface so you can apply additional coats. I haven’t tried them yet, but am looking forward to it. Jerry
The fact that the pastels get mostly washed away after sealing is why I graduated to using AIM and Bragdon powders. The AIM give dramatic results so go lightly and the bragdon give gradual results that layer very nicely. Niether disapear when sealed and the Bragdon claim no sealing is needed.
Also the made for modeling powders are much finer and don’t tend to clump up. This could be attributed to technique.
