I’m building a station that has wooden platforms and Campbell brown paper shingles. Can anyone give me guidance as to what products to use to achieve a weathered appearance in one or both of these materials.
Floquil used to market wood stains in their solvent paint line. Don’t see them listed in the 2006 Walthers Book. India ink and denatured alcohol can be mixed to give shades of gray to black. Any stain will not work on wood that has been glued. Stain the wood before building. Wood stains from a paint store would also work but 1/2 pint is usually the smallest can sold.
India Ink and rubbing alcohol is the number 1 method. Learning to “paint” with it is an aquired skill. Different concentrations and application methods can make something look dull and dirty to streaked. Black ink is the #1 color to use, but brown can also be used for staining wood. You can stain after gluing if you use the glue properly. Neatness couunts here, I do it all the time. Here’s a before and after picture of a rock wall I recently did with paper glued with white glue, painted with acrylic paint, and then the difference ink and alcohol make. This was about 8 drops per ounce of ink. Fred
I use Floquil paints that are deluted for all the wood painting and staining I do. The more its deluted the more it works like a stain. Its best to try it on a scape piece of wood to see how it will look. Using a grayish stain can make wood looked weathered.
