Try this formula for weathering wooden structures.
1.) White vinegar + steel wool = rust stain on wood
2.) Put the two together in a metal coffee can to set for a week or two or when-
ever you want to use this stuff !
3.) The resulting mixture will stain wood in a variety of tones, the rustier the
mix the darker and each type of wood will turn according to a chemical
reaction with the wood.
4.) As far as I have used this over time, I have not detected any harmful vapors
and it is safe to use indoors but because of the odor of vinegar I
recommend you apply it to whatever it is outside !
5.) The “stain” produced is good for picture frames, diorama bases,
telephone polls, trestle bents, RR ties and anything else you can think of
and it’s less hazardous than commercial stains and takes only minutes to
take effect, you can actually see the chemical reation taking place ! It’s
really cool stuff.
