Weaver L1a boiler shell removal

I am trying to get the boiler shell off my L1a. I removed the screw under the front pilot and the 2 horizontal screws above the draw bar, the boiler doesn’t seem loose. have I missed something? fill me in guys. also I have a switch under the ash pan that says smoke on & off and the same switch in the tender. is there a reason for this?

Hi John

There are 2 small screws that hold the base of the elephant ears to the frame.

Two very small screws.

Remove these…in total…5 screws to remove…

Keep us posted.

Dave

got it dave, I also had to loosen the rear mud flap bar (I think) and the shell came right off. I started out reading the instructions that came with it telling me to take off the tender shell to install the battery. so much for reading instructions. Now she is all lubed and batteried and running its breakin laps. thanks

Hey John

Noticed that too. 9 volt goes in the engine, should be in the tender.

Bad idea, in my opinion.

Somewhat irelevant to me because I only run Command and therefore a battery is not needed.

Getting into a tender is far more user friendly than getting into the engine.

So far, I like this engine but I’m happy I did not pay full price for this unit.

At what we paid, we got good value.

Dave

I have the command remote and a powermaster instead of the command base so I can run my PW stuff. going to get the command base this week now that I have 2 command locos. I see by installing the battery it lets the engine go into shutdown sound after I shut the power off to the track. when you are in command mode will it do that without the battery?

The battery permits the sounds to continue in conventional mode when there is an interuption in power.

In command, a full 18 volts is constant to the track, therefore no interuption in power.

Dave, after you shut the 18v to the track does the loco still make sounds? with the battery it does. it goes into a shutdown mode with a large steam release sound at the end.

Glad all is work good for YUZ GIZ. I am still waiting on the return of mine. Hope to have it for the weekend? ORG in the OCT.-NOV. 2006 did a real nice review of the engine. They also have the boiler and tenders off to show the guts of the engine and tender. Might be worth getting for yourself, I have it and read ita few times.

I read that befor buying, nice review. should have looked closer where the battery was. I have to get the command base to see if mine is ok. I have noticed when the smoke is on the engine speeds up and slows down by itself when running at moderate speeds. at slow speeds it is smooth and with the smoke turned off it runs smooth at all speeds.

Hi Laz - John

I also read the review prior to purchase.

EOB would be a nice addition to this engine.

As far as the battery goes. A battery does allow for shut down sounds.

However, I have a number of Lionel engines and found it easier to run without batteries.

I don’t have to remember how old they are and possible leakage.

The extended shut down sounds are not important to me.

As well, sure don’t want to go into this steamer just to replace a battery.

Newer diesels have a hatch on top for the battery which makes it much easier.

Laz, please let us know what the problem was with your engine.

Dave

The UPS guy was here today but I missed him maybe tomorrow. Weaver ships but you got to sign for it when it arrives. I can’t wait. Going to run it tomorrow if I do get it.

Hi GIZ,

Got back my L1b today. WEAVER replaced the chuff switch and also replaced the R2LC008 radio board. I just got done running it on the layout pulling 6 streamliners. All works great. Will try and run some more later. This is one cool engine. Hope yUZ GIZ have no problems with yours. GARY HARTMAN from WEAVER did my repairs, great job GARY. Thankyou!

Guys you must check the gearbox lube, mine was barely lubed. runs much smoother now. you will need a 00 phillips.

Good stuff Laz…have fun!

John, thanks for the tip. I tend to trust the motor gear lube from the factory and so far have not been disappointed. However, this weekend I will check the lube on this engine and report back.

My engine also tends to be a little “stiff”. Needs more break in I suspect and the lube might be the final trick.

Dave

I will check lube also but right now it runs GREAT. I ran it yesterday for over one and a half hours and smooth as silk. RUNS GREAT SOUNDS GREAT! Thanks for the tip JOHN.

laz57

be sure to check it, mine was almost bare. I got the command base today and ran the L1a with it. very nice. now I have to learn more buttons. I was looking through the manual for the crew talk but couldn’t find anything. I get some talk by pushing buttons randomly but cant get it consistanty. well that will be tomorrows project.

JOHN, hit AUX1 and the number two key and you will get a garbled response. Then hit AUX1 and the 7 key and you will get dispatch then if you just hit the 7 key it will be dispatch again saying clear to go. The AUX1 and number 5 key will shut it the engine down. Hope this helps?

laz57

thanks, I’ll give it a try

John,

Check out the Lionel site and www.coilcouplers.com they both have(or had ?) interactive tutorials on operating in a TMCC environment.

Hi Guys

Running the Weaver Brass Hudson tonight.

Runs well, however, I cannot control the ON and OFF via Cab 1, for the smoke unit.

I can control all other functions with the Cab 1, just not the smoke.

Aux 8 does nothing.

I can only shut the smoke off via the ON / OFF switch under the hatch on the tender.

Tried all the resets as per manual.

Any ideas before I contact techs at Weaver?

Thank You

Dave
