Weaver-Trains-Yes--no-maybe??

First time of seeing a Weaver on E-bay, sure was a nice looking loco &tender in new box!
Price was $300. Looked liked like more detail than anything else I had seen for most general trains.
The model was a PRR-H10 w/9624 loco & tender
Just wondering what you guys take is on Weaver–
Thanks[:)][:)][?]

Weaver makes great stuff, and supports their customers.

Theyre new locos have TMCC and Railsounds, That PRR engine, is a somugsa (sp) brass loco.

Great question, something I have been wondering myself. I don’t see much Weaver in this part of the country. The largest selection of Weaver that I have seen is in Wheeling, WV. We have had discussions on the forum about Lionel, MTH, Williams and Atlas, but very little on Weaver.

I have two of their covered hoppers(different road numbers!), and, given the cost, I’m very happy with them. They don’t compare to the likes of Atlas or Lionel, but they are also quite a bit less expensive. Some of them have plastic trucks, and some die-cast. I’m told that the die-cast are a lot better, but mine have plastic, and have given me no trouble.

Ben,

As a owner of about 30 Weaver cars, all plastic trucked… They do fine, even at the front of a train

Not that I know that much about Lionel, but the Weaver loco and tender on e-bay
certainly had a lot of detail.
Any who just some I was looking into.
I need to get a Greenburg book on Lionel values, I want to bid or buy at times
but not sure of whats what.
Thanks for input on Weaver[:)][:)]

Weaver cars, definately yes. I have 68 of them. They look great, and run fine. Their low cost means I can have a large fleet. I can weather or alter them guilt free, as they are not “collectable” like other brands.

Engines are a different story. In my mind they are a maybe. I don’t really have a lot of experience with them. About 15 years ago I was a member of a 2 rail O club. This was before Weaver really got into 3 rail. The club owned some Weaver engines. As I recall they were prone to mechanical problems. Of course they were subject to heavy running at the club, which didn’t help. In the years since, I would have to believe that they have made improvements. The engines at the club were plastic diesels, Weaver hadn’t gotten into steam engines at that time as far as I know.

If Samhongsa is making them for Weaver, as Chris said, they should be pretty good. I was giving serious consideration (and drool) to the idea of buying their model of Milwaukee Road’s 261 which came out last year. If only money grew on trees.[swg]

I think Weaver is a good way to go. The cars are scale and have accurate paint schemes. You can buy die-cast trucks for the cars for about 8 bucks a pair. 2 screws and the trucks are changed. I have a MEC RS-11 with Railsounds and it.s a strong, great runner. Weaver is a quality buy.

I have a brass LV black Diamond, like the one in my signature picture, and it sa fine model. I might even upgrade to TMCC/Railsounds

Please excuse my lack of knowledge, but what the heck is Samhongsa and Tmcc or whatever it was??
Thanks[:)][:)]

No problem. My lack of knowledge about trains could fill a bathtub.

Samhongsa is basically a company that builds engines for Weaver and others

TMCC = Trainmaster Command Control by Lionel.

Here is my story for weaver. I have about 8 of their engines. I picked up an New HAven I-5 for 350.00, it had it’s sound board and tmcc removed. I contacted weaver about a light out and they told me to send it back. THey replaced the board and sound for FREE! Since then i have been buying their products, and i love them all.
They are great. Bill

After reading this thread, and several posts in particular about how inexpensive Weaver cars are, I went to the Weaver web site expecting to see inexpensive rolling stock. The cheapest I found was $33.00! Is that what passes for inexpensive?!

Jim

WEll, when you consider that many atlas cars go for upwards of 55.00, the same for lionel and a few others, yes, weaver is quite a bit less expensive.

Weaver seems to have the most inexpensive freight cars. Picked up some really nice ones for $20 each. They are a bit light and seem not too sturdy but that’s the only way I could afford any scale rolling stock.

I own more Weaver freight cars than any other brand because they’re more affordable than most other brands while maintaining scale size and good detail. I also have a few of their plastic diesels and one brass steam locomotive, and I’ve been very happy with their products.

I was septical about the Weaver plastic truck frieght cars until I bought a few. They do just fine and look great! Even in the front of a 15 car mixed manufacture train on O-31 curves. I will buy more. I don’t have exprience with the Loco’s, but plan to purchase the USRA light pacific this year. The Pennsylvania loco sounds like a good deal to me. You can probably add the TMCC and Railsounds.

Thats MSRP… check AMhobbies, Justrains, or Jim train shop for the deals

I have the Weaver H-10 and the G5s and both are very smooth runners. They have a lot of detail however they were made before the days of TMCC and sound boards. I installed a QSI sound system in the H-10 and added the remote uncoupling tender coupler. At the time the tender of the G5s was too small to hold the sound systems of the day so it remains silent. I think their steam engines are well build and, if my two are typical, I’d say they are good runners too.

Hey dtpowell, just to let you know. Just trains has some killer deals on weaver right now. One is the 2-8-0 with full TMCC and sound for 399.99, and the other is the G1 for 499.99 with full tmcc and sound., I have the G1 and it is a terrific runner. Plus you can layaway if you call and ask.
