I know I know… there are a ton of web sites with train photos. But I just found a good one with a nice selection – be patient at first they all seem like shots of the New York City subway or elevated being constructed, but there are others and not all are New York oriented.

This site “provides access to over 275,000 images digitized from
primary sources and printed rarities in the collections of The New
York Public Library [NYPL], including illuminated manuscripts,
historical maps, vintage posters, rare prints and photographs,
illustrated books, printed ephemera, and more.” Searchable, or
browsable by collection, such as art and literature, cities and
buildings, industry and technology, and nature and science. The railroad pictures appear to be in industry and technology.

There was a helpful article in the NY Times last week, IIRC, which talked about this site and some of its quirks re content, searching, etc.
