Webcams won't Come Up

I know this is off topic, but I’m hoping for some ideas.

We got a new computer today and we got it running .I checked western.com for the Portland webcam and only got the x box icon.I checked other webcams and got the same thing.Any ideas?

Have a good one.

First thing that I would check is your Internet protection software, whatever that may be. For instance, I use Norton Internet Protection Center (or something like that). If I want to see some webcams, I have to turn off my protection first.

I just tried turning off my protection settings and then go to western.com for the Portland webcams. It came up the same as before.Could it be that I may need some video streaming program such as realplayer? Thanks.

Have a good one.

The Portland webcams show a Java logo while loading for me; so that would be the first program to check. (Webcams are working fine for me.)

Many Windows XP computers don’t come with a Java program. You have to go to http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp and download it.

Mark

Thanks for your help. I down loaded the Java.I could only see a few webcams. I had to disable my Norton to see the Rochelle cam.

Bob

That’s interesting. The Rochelle cam is one of the very few webcams that I can see without disabling Norton. [%-)]

I had no trouble with my old computer. My brand new one has Windows XP media edition.

Wish i knew the answer,My new laptop all i get is the webcam view with the little red x in corner,i get a spalsh with java loading, then nothing.Have tried about everything.click on previous pictures and they come up fine.My other computers come up ok.Same setup.Someday someone will tell me what is wrong

Hey! Hey! I see Portland!!! Thank you corwinda and cnw for your assistance![tup]

Remember, you have to empty the Java cache and delete your “Temporary Internet Files” on a regular basis or it will take a looooong time to load and start running. If you’re getting a “Red X” that’s usually the reason.

To operate as the fastest speed possible – Go to your Windows computer’s “Control Panel” and click on “Java” after you load the program. Under the “General” tab on the “Java Control Panel” that pops up you’ll see at the bottom “Temporary Internet Files.” In that box, click “Delete Files.” Then click on “Settings.” Next click on “View Applets” at the top right. Make sure the box at the bottom left of the “View Applets” frame where its says “Enable Caching” is BLANK. Click it off if it has an X in it.

That will make any Java applications run faster. You’ll need to dump your Temporary Internet Files on a regular basis, but Java will no longer save Applets, which also slow down the webcams.

Hey PZ

I did all that and it helped. Then I upgraded my Norton, and now the web cam comes up without disabling and it does so very quickly. Go figger.

Bob

Well, since PCs can be finicky things, something good happened and I guess that makes everything jake.

I just switched to a faster notebook (Cetrino Duo2) with 2G RAM. Got all of my graphics programs moved over successfully, but now for some reason when I use the “thumbnails” mode to view my files, all I get is an Adobe logo for my PDF files. I get a photo thumb for JPEG and TIFF files, as I did before. I had the same OS (XP) on the other unit (purchased new last Feb.) and when I looked at my PDFs on that machine, I’d see a mini thumbnail version of the PDF first page. Have searched just about everyhere and can’t figger out why I’ve lost that function. Would love to get an answer.

PZ

When you right-click on the icon and select “Update thumbnail”, does that cause your thumbnail to change to the first page?
