Weekend logins

Login over the weekend is blocked and won’t be open again until Monday morning, so don’t log out or you won’t be able to get back on. Don’t clear your cookies. If you do, you’ll be locked out. I was wondering why posting was light.

Wow…! Is that intentional? Bergie takin’ charge?

Seems like. Crandell discovered it when he couldn’t log back in and emailed me about it and asked for this message to be posted.

This is a little scary but after what has happened over the past couple of weekends it seems more reasonable. At least we will not have a troll relaunch his attacks.

The thing that I worry about is that sometimes my computer logs me out of places and I don’t know it until I try to get back on then I have to log on again. Happened to me this morning on Photobucket. Mike

Mike: Are you on dial-up? The reason I’m asking is that back when I was on dial-up my computer would do that. It wouldn’t log me off, just break the connection and I would have to dial back in. After a month of that I went to cable.

It says you can access the subscriber only content this weekend but I don’t see where you can access that from?(anyone? anyone?..Bueller?)

Loathar: Check your PM’s.

I e-mailed Erik (Bergie) and Crandell. I’ll let you know what I find out.

Tom

I am DSL. This computer really does some wierd things sometimes. Mike

Ok, that explains it. DSL goes through the phone line. It’s not your computer disconnecting you, it’s the phone line timing out.

Thanks Jeff. They probably had to do maintenance to clear out all of Al’s bogus accounts and screen names to free up server space.[swg]

DSL doesn’t “time out” like dial up would, because of how it’s designed to operate.

Some cookies (the text files that keep track of when you last logged in, who you are, etc) automatically expire after a set time limit. Some of them are tied to your IP address, and with dialup you generally acquire a new IP address each time you “connect” to the mothership at your internet provider. With DSL, it generally keeps the same IP address as long as it’s connected (Usually while the “DSL Modem” is turned on) unless you’re using a certain type of authentication where you have to type in the password each time…

You “should” be alright unless you specifically click logout, or clear your cookies.

Yea, whatever you do…Don’t lose your cookies! [swg]

Tom

Yeah, don’t get caught with your hand in the cookie jar

Okay, here’s the scoop from Erik (Bergie):

“Our IT guys are doing a big network upgrade this weekend. It may mean that if someone has logged out, they might not be able to log back in until the project is complete. (Maybe tomorrow or Monday at worst)”

So, the lesson here is: Don’t log out of the forum over the next couple of days. Otherwise, you may not be able to log back in.

Tom

Update: I also put up a forum announcement about it at the following link:

crudd… Im at work so when i leave here I know for a fact that im not logged in at home, because I got that message earlier today. Oh well… got work to do neways

It’s no problem for me. I stay logged in all the time. I can count the times I logged out this year on one hand.

No kidding !?! [;)]

We now know that it’s for maintenance, but it is an interesting technique to use during those painful problem weekends.

By the way, MR IT guys and gals, thanks for giving up your weekend to take care of this. We appreciate the effort.
