Gidday All, well its that time again down here in the “Land of the Long White Cloud”. Hope everyone has had a reasonable, or better still, a good week and are now looking forward to a Great Weekend.
I’m finally back to Alcladding my fleet again after having spent a few months metalizing some shells and parts for two friends of mine (although I did take time out to quickly fix up one of my HO buses).
My latest project:
It’s a Walthers Budd Tavern Observation unit (out of production). It’s been paint stripped and disassembled. My goal is to make it look like the prototype in this photo (minus the skirting).
Finally got around to finishing some more cars this past week and here they are!
This is a McKeen Models, early ACF Exterior Post Boxcar, painted Boxcar Red and lettered with Herald King Decals.
Another Covered Hopper for the Reading Railroad Sugar Business. The yellow line above the reporting marks means it is to be delivered to Amstar Sugar. This car is an Eastern Car Works ACF Covered Hopper with Circular Hatches to match the Reading cars. Car is painted with Scalecoat II MW Gray and lettered with Herald King Decals.
This is the second of four of these Atlas ACF 4600CF pre-71 Covered Hoppers that I am doing for the Reading Railroad. Car is in general service and is painted with Scalecoat II MW Gray and lettered with Herald King Decals.
Looks like we’re off to a great start for WPF as a holiday week starts here in the US.
I finished off the last of the planned major industrial buildings on the layout, the Mears Lumber sawmill at Rockwood, along with its office and warehouse. Logs come down the Cascade Branch to Tefft, then are moved down to Rockwood to the mill.
The mill is constructed of wood siding laid over black foamcore. It’s served by two sidings, one for the log dump at the mill pond and one for shipping cut lumber and timbers. Things look a little barren still, as I will be pouring the pond this morning.
My log pond is on the small side, but it is what it is. I used a bit of forced perspective with it by using siding with narrower spacing on the wall that’s directly behind the pond, as well as small windows. It actually works pretty well.
I angled the building out from the backdrop, another old trick to fool the eye. You can also see the office/warehouse in the foreground, which I bashed from leftover pieces from a Walthers Valley Canning kit. The side walls are JTT cut stone sheet, sprayed brown, then the mortar lines are scraped to reveal the white plastic of the JTT sheet. Works pretty well and very quick for a good looking stone wall.
Sorry these pics won’t have as much visual interest as others that have been or will be posted. A keep-alive system install for a Loksound Select decoder on a Stewart Baldwin VO-660 switcher chassis:
Tight squeeze
I had to remove the sage green interior in the cab. The large cap JUST fits - front to back. (At least there’s still room on either side for a crew. [:D])
I bought the parts from Digi-Key, as those outlined on pg. 17 of the Loksound Select manual. Randy (rrinker) offered some helpful guidance, as well.
I don’t know how this picture is actually going to post, as I am relatively inexperienced at posting pictures, but this is a kitbash of a Roxbury Roofing kit by RailroadKits.com. it is set on a diorama. Only the smaller attached building and the small piece on top of the coal bunker (lean to) are the kit, the rest is scratch built.
Incredible work this week guys. I just received a second Genesis FP 7 A unit to make a ABA consist. I weathered it to make it look like the other 2 units.
Here’s 2-8-8-2 #3612 with an eastbound freight just coming out of South Yuba canyon and taking the house track at Wagon Wheel Gap due to some track maintainence on the main.
I was going to post some new photos of the Boothbay RR Village layout I took during our work session yesterday, but ran into a “new” Photobucket beta site that would do nothing and go nowhere. My rant about this is here. I have sent PB and email about my experience… http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/88/t/211766.aspx
Has anyone had similar problems?

Is that a C&O Combine I see behind the Connie? I’m trying to figure out where to get appropriate rolling stock for my F-19 now that Branchline blueprints (Now Atlas) doesn’t make the old heavyweights anymore.
