Weekend Photo Fun 27-29 December, 2013

Here are the cars I finished over the week!

Eastern Car Works 1958CF ACF Covered Hopper, added airlines and A-Line Sill steps, painted with Scalecoat II Boxcar Red paint and lettered with Herald King decals.

I did this car in reply to the “Foobie” that Athearn did with their 40’ Early Bird Boxcars which one may have existed, but no proof has ever been found. This is Branchline #1100 50’ Boxcar kit, used the Despatch Roof and Ends, A-Line Sill Steps, painted with Scalecoat II Boxcar Red paint and lettered with Greg Komar Decals.

IMRC 4750CF PS Covered Hopper kit, painted with Scalecoat II MofW Gray and lettered with Herald King Decals.

Thanks for looking!

Nice work Rick. Do you detail motive power also? Nothing fancy this week, just the continuation of workiing on the extension.

Before they wore blue & orange, Midland’s geep 9’s wore basic black (former N&W units) I decided I needed one, so here is is! P2K chassis with a Front Range shell!

I want to thank Ja Bear and middleman who nominated my photos for best of the year - that’s very kind of you. It’s always pleasing when someone likes my pics, but I’m happy if that’s as far as it goes because WPF, for example, isn’t a contest. Whenever I check in I always enjoy every submission.

Guilford’s SD35 #614 rolls into the yard at Calais after some snowfall.

Happy new year to all.

This week, I caught the Dove Creek-Durango local at Hesperus, then followed into Durango. After spotting a car of machinery parts at the May Day Mine, the crew picked up some NG coal cars for Durango, along with the Western Union shop car.

The coal cars look puny next to the F-M.

Because of the mix of SG and NG cars in the train, the local must take the dual gauge industrial lead at West Durango.

After dropping the coal in Yard #2, the F-M spots the Western Union car at the freighthouse.

Looks like an easy day, with a caboose hop back to beans at Dove Creek.

Curious about dual gauge? There’s more here: http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/88/p/220782/2441761.aspx

Thanks Curt for the compliments and yes I do motive power also, but none have been finished lately, although I have a GP7, GP40-2, GP40, RS-36, C-425 and U23B on the workbench in various stages of construction.

Here are a couple I finished in the last couple of years!

A Stewart U25B kit where I added lift rings, signal box and other detail.

Atlas RW-32 where I installed the Cal-Scale details from their kit for the RS-32, removed the incorrect (for NYC) three chime horn and replaced with two blat horns mounted on the long hood.

Both engines were painted and lettered using Microscale Decals.

Excellent work everyone. Mikelhh’s photo is an inspiration. I thought it was a photo from a back issue of Trains !

I’ve been working on a trash container train, so I thought I’d post a couple of pics on my progress. Still some more detailing to do.

Mike.

Rick J: Very nice! You must have quite a fleet of well detailed freight cars.

Curt: Benchwork is one aspect of the hobby I don’t really enjoy. I’m always glad to get past it to track and scenery…

Karl: I liked your Maryland Midland pic’s from last week so much that I “Binged” some photo’s of the real thing.Your painting and detailing is spot on.

Mike (mikelhh): All your shots are terrific, but I think your “snow” shots are as good as it gets.

Mike (mlehman): I really enjoy the pic’s of your wonderful layout. I only wish they were bigger. Is there a way for me to see larger versions that I’m missing?

Mike (mbinsewi): Nice weathering on the trash train. Enjoyed your other pic’s too. Thanks for the links.

Rick J,Curt, and Karl: Have you thought about changing your names to “Mike”?

'Worked on another kit from Banta Model Works this week. It’s a boxcar/shed conversion. I put in a wood floor, made some crude shelves from styrene strip, cut more styrene into toolbox, bucket shapes, added a man pushing a broom(with a really thick handle!),and two nano LEDs. Not a lot of detail, but enough when viewed through the windows and door to make an impression.

EDIT: 'Forgot to mention that it’s for the On3 layout.

Have a good weekend, all, and keep posting!

Mike

Mike,

Thanks for the compliments[:D]

It’s a really great group of picks this week and your new boxcar/shed is just wonderful.

I’m on the very low bucks image hosting account, one step up from free. I’ll give a try resizing one of my pics to see what that does.

Feel free to PM me if you’d like a bigger copy. I do need to get this figured out as I would like my pics to be bigger[swg]

EDIT: Oh well, same old, same old.[:$]

A few shots of my large urban area of Franklinton which I spent most of last winter into early spring building.

First a few bird’s eye views of Franklinton Station:

And one from below:

Thank so much for the compliment. Btw, can your guy come over and sweep out around here?[;)]

Got 2 sons named Mike aleady, we don’t need nother Mike in the house!

reached a milestone this week with the completion of the benchwork for my pennisula and the area leading from there to the foyt yard.

mainline height is about an inch lower than the finished town area in the pennisula.

here is the relocated mine line following the wall instead of going to the pennisula. which is also where the pennisula meets the around the wall benchwork

some before and after of the intersection of the pennisula to the benchwork

EDIT: if you go to my thread link the pics are larger.

Hi…

Been a while since I posted anything here…So…

A few pics of a recently completed caboose for the Birdsboro & Reading RR.

Hi again…a teaser pic or three of my doodlebug.

Great stuff again this weekend! Keep up the good work everyone!

Rick J., Great looking freight cars and locos.

Curt, Looks like you’re making real progress.

Karl. Great looking Geep.

Mike, (mlkelhh), Awesome photo man!

Mike, (mlehman), Thats quite a layout, the complexities would drive me nuts.

Mike, (middleman), Nice details.

jecorbett, Great station. Reminds me of Toledo.

Googler, A master at work. Great construction.

Dennis, A nice little caboose. I have on much like it for the PRR.

Nothing hand made here, just a couple of Christmas presents:

NYC Niagara #6008 is a BLI locomotive. A real beauty and my Christmas present from my wife.

PRR T-1 Duplex #5501 is also a BLI locomotive and was our Christmas present to our oldest grandson.

Keep the photos and ideas coming everyone. You always make WPF the best thread of the week. Thank you all.

Thank you. It is similar to the Toledo station but it is intended to be a reasonable facsimile of Omaha’s Burlington Station which is the prototype for Walthers Union Station kit. Like the prototype I configured it with the pillars trackside and the concourse extending out from under the pillars as seen in this photo:

I use a CMR concourse which looks good but seems a bit out of proportion with the station so I have ordered some DPM modulars to build a concourse that won’t be quite as tall and will have smaller windows.

At one time, the Burlington concourse connected with the Union Station concourse and its seven platforms as seen in this photo:

Omaha’s Union Station has been completely refurbished and is now the home to the Durham Western Heritage Museum. The main waiting room looks magnificent and if you didn’t know better, you’d think you had been taken back to the 1950s which is when I first saw Union Station.

Here are just a couple pictures I took of the inside last year:

Sadly, Burlington Station has fallen into disrepair and plans to refurbish it as luxury condos has apparently fallen through. Here is what it looks like now:

Hello,
I want to Wish All of You, the very best wishes & the best New Year for 2014!!!
I have really appreciated the positive influence & support of everyone here, through the years!
A GIANT Thank You!!! To Everyone!!!
Again, this is an incredible WPF already, Great Subjects & Pix!!!
I wanted to Check In & Wish Everyone a Happy New Year, going forward…

To not disappoint, I wanted to share a recent ‘last gem’ purchase.
Here is an Overland Models HO, Jordan.
I wanted this one, to help me modernize a couple of plastic kits that seemed a little bare, & not as modern.
This actually took a little work, some things were ‘paint frozen’, but I was able to take care if it, without damage.
Please Enjoy!
Happy New Year!!!

EDIT: If you want to review how a Jordan Spreader works, &/or just want to see one in action;
Please Search: CN Plow Extra Letellier
In my opinion, this should be a Jordan Advert…
It demonstrates the wing action, & the tipper blades, & also, -somwhat late in the video, how the pilot blade is also adjustable, (& explains the vertical coupler slot in it), as it negotiates a highway crossing. I like the errr, earrr, err, noises the hyd’s make when it makes the grade… I dig that video…

DRG&W Jordan Spreader open

Chad,

Season’s greetings and Happy New Year to you! Good to see you and great pic.

If you got more pics, I started a snowfighting thread a couple of weeks back and that would be a great addition: http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/88/t/225401.aspx

I love Jordan spreaders. One’s in my future, too, the Rio Grande’s OU, whenever I can scare up a Rio Grande Models kit to build.

Take care.

Thanks, Allan[A]

It confuses me a little, sometimes. I had to think a moment to be sure and send the local down the right track. The main is only partly dual gauge through there to provide a swicthing lead for the smelter. If I’d just break down and build two curved dual gauge turnouts the problem would be solved…[*-)]

I, too really like jecorbett’s new station complex. It’s a magnificent example of compression while respecting the integrity of the prototype. Nice work.

In fact, lots of outstanding work and it just keeps coming. We’re ending 2013 on a high note, I’d say. >>[<:o)] << Note: party guy is still being held hostage [:^)]

A couple of over-and-under shots. By truly amazing coincidence, not only did the locomotives appear at the same time but so did the cabooses! The lower locomotive is an IHC Consolidation, the upper is a Bowser USRA Pacific. Boxcars lettered for the R&R are Athearn BBs, the cabeese are Walthers models of the C&O wood caboose. Other cars are P2K kits.
